There's a Canon service depot here in Calgary. The Camera Store can get you their address. I've heard some horror stories about the place so to be honest, I wouldn't expect it back in time for your trip.

Given the cost, I think a new camera (or even a loaner via ahem....returns) might be your best option given your timeframe.

"Rent" one for your trip if it is less than 2 weeks - go to Future Shop or Best Buy, pick up a new Canon camera, have some fun with it - if you like it, keep it.

The A95 is getting pretty dated, not sure how much it would cost to fix, but I would bet it would be similar in price to just purchasing a new one.

I seem to remember cameras being cheaper in the US, is this true. I know that they are duty free as well.

I never have liked the pics with this camera, the colour just wasn't right even though I can't put my figure on it.

balls!
Look on the bright side - now you can get a nice new camera with more megapixels, better image processor, and maybe even more zoom!

If you're not a fan of Canon, I am personally a big fan of Panasonic - check out their line up - great pics, awesome image stabilization, only issue I have is they have a lot of digital noise in low-light/high sensitivity situations.

IIRC it is shutter delay.
Panasonic is good for that, I haven't had a problem with it, even the new canons with the Digic II or Digic III processor are good at it.

Here's a sample pic I took with my Pana FZ 30 - pic was taken 8MP, 12x Zoom and image stabilization turned on (I was waaaayyy up in the nosebleeds!)

Obviously the shutter delay was pretty good, as I was able to get the player jumping off the ground, and the ball just starting to be released by Roethlisberger.

Not sure what kind of camera that is, but if you need a cheap one to take on vacation, FS has a 4 Megpixel Kodak on for $90. Clicky here

Low end Kodak cameras = poop. I wouldn't wish one of those upon anyone. Avoid them at all costs. Nikon makes decent entry level cameras under 200 (Nikon Coolpix L6 and Coolpix L3) and back them up with a 2 year warranty.

Just bought myself a Canon A630 yesterday after a length reviewal process. My previous A70 CCD crapped the bed and the cost just to look at it was nearing a new camera.

Use digital photography review website; http://www.dpreview.com for professional and user reviews for nearly every camera. Shows sample photos as well, and a handy comparison tool.

I chose the A630 over the A710 IS and S3 IS because of it's larger CCD size. Better for noise in low light shots.

I haven't had any issues with my Kodak 2MP camera I bought 2 years ago. Maybe I've just been lucky.

You very well could be. Their recent series of low end cameras has been poorly received by the market, especially the C355. I've never seen a camera returned as frequently as this particular model. Oddly enough, it is only the low end models we get back. Kodak's with a Schneider lens fair much better for consumers.

My Canon a75 had a similar problem last year (although mine was the lens would never fully deploy)
It seems the Canon cameras have issues with the lens mechanism busting...

Are there camera fixing joints in Calgary? How much wll it cost? I tried the Camera Store but they don't fix them apparently. I am going to Florida on Wednesday too and I want to take pics. Am I screwed?

Did you perhaps drop it or bang it? I banged my camera and thought it was fine but the lens bent a little and was unable to come out as it was jammed and would turn off right away. I can't remember where i took it but it wasn't worth fixing.

the Nikon point and shoots aren't very good anymore. They contracted out the maufacturing of them to a 3rd party so the quality isn't as good anymore.

It might just be a slow processor however, how do you take pictures? Do you squeeze the shutter half way, let camera focus, and then slowly squeeze the rest of the way or do you just pound it in one motion? If you depress the shutter in one motion then you have lag because the camera has to focus and then fire. Just bringing it up because many people have issues depressing the shutter button. It's also often the cause of blurry or missed photos.

Getting it fixed is probably not worth it, it usually costs $150+ to have them even look at it.
