iPod Goodness
Well, there was a thread about the hype with iPod. I thought I'd see who has one, and what they have for it as far as accessories and software. I have a iPod 30G Video and my wife has a 2G Nano. What else can we do with these things other than the obvious.
PS - What do you guys reccomend for a FM transmitter? I bought a RCA thing, and it's a piece of crap. What do you have?

I quite like the Monster in car FM transmitter I got. It manages to put out a clear interference free signal in my 2000 Accord on 89.5. The newer Monster one are supposedly even better as you're not limited to predefined frequencies. Charges your iPod to boot so you're never out of juice in the car.

my wife just got a Nano and I have no idea what the big hubbub is about them. I'm not exactly a "techy" when it comes to these sort of things and haven't been keeping up wit the ipod craze.
so....what is the big deal with these things?

That's kinda the point of the "Hype" thread, I'm kinda looking for more of a software/hardware advice with these things.
As far as my thoughts... I like the face that it very organized within the software provided. But the big hype is that Apple could afford a major marketing attack, and being one of the biggest sellers of legal online music sales, that doesn't hurt either.
Did I need the iPod? No, my PSP does most of what this thing does, and then some. Am I happy I got it? Yup... I've played on it every day since I've gotten it, trying to catch every nook and cranny in it.

I'm in the same boat as you. I didn't "need" it, but I got it as a bonus from work, now I take it everywhere. I love hooking it up to my portable stereo when I am working outside. I also bought Pac-Man for it and its tons of fun.

The iPod is not supposed to be 'techie' though.
It's appeal is that it is a simple interface, integrated iTunes capability, simple good looks, and ubiquitous existence.
Myself, or my gf, or my mother, or father, or boss would EVER buy a PSP, but we all own iPods.
It is the MP3 player for all the non-techies! Not the ultimate for techies!

I have a 2 GB Nano...I use it mostly for the purpose of music, but I wanted to learn a foreign language (Spanish) and I know there is software available to learn it for the Ipod so I am hoping it works with mine.
As far as accessories go, I run often with my dog so i have that armband thing to make it easier.
I want to get the accessories for the car, but I might be getting a new (used) car, so my question was..are the Ipod Car accessories compatible with every car? Sorry if that sounds dumb, I dont know much about cars and stuff. Haha.

I have a 20 GB 4th gen iPod, sometimes called an iPod Photo. It's more than enough for my entire music collection, I still have 5 GB of room. Some day I'll upgrade to a video capable one so I can watch Daily Show and Colbert Report episodes on my commute, But for now I am more than content.
I have a Griffin RoadTrip for using it in the car. Basic FM transmitter that plugs into the cigarette lighter. Keeps the iPod charged, which is nice, but the sound is kind of ass, as with most FM transmitters. Most newer decks or cars have auxillary inputs that allow you to wire your iPod to the car stereo easily, giving you a greatly improved sound quality and often the ability to use your stereo control panels to navigate through your iPod content.
I have a pair of Ultimate Ears enhanced bass noise cancelling earphones - as easy as the iPod is to use, the headphones supplied with it are pure ****. The Ultimate Ears ones I have give a vastly improved bass response and sound quality.
I have an aluminum armor case for my iPod. Works well in that the iPod is totally encased when I'm listening to it, and it easily flips open for access to the wheel when I want to change things up. It is a bit of a pain to remove from this case when I want to hook it up to the RoadTrip, though.
There are aftermarket kits to wire your iPod to your older car stereo, but they are dependent on the make and model of your car or stereo, and there can be compatibility issues. The FM transmitters work with just about anything, but thwe sound quality is a definite tradeoff for ease of use.
One thing gaining steam in iPod accessories seesm to be speakers or docking stations. The point kind of eludes me, as 90+% of my music on my iPod has been ripped from CDs. If I want to listen to my iPod over speakers, I can listen to my CDs instead. But a nice compromise I found was a $20 cable that connects to the iPod's docking port and gives you RCA jacks that can be used to connect to virtually any stereo or PC that has speakers. It works just fine, and is a lot cheaper than the docks and speakers you see for sale.

The best part of an ipod is simply that all your music is with you no matter where you go. I always carry a cable around that lets me hook it up to left and right stereo (dont know what its called, but futureshop has them), and im able to plug it in a friends' houses when the party needs...well...better music.
I recently also bought a new ipod shuffle to work out and run with, i found the 30 gig video to bulky and it bounced around when i ran...the shuffle is less than the size of a matchbox and carries ~400 songs. I've had it for a month and have yet to recharge it. It's got a little clip that sticks to anything...i love it. oh and its about 30 or 40 bucks less than most other 1 gig mp3 players.
