maybe he was wearing suspenders. Maybe he's wearing a GPS system incase he goes missing. Maybe its an alien mind control unit pushing him to say things he wouldn't say. It would explain his pauses during the debate.

Did the device explain why the normally ramrod-straight president seemed hunched over during much of the debate?

One of the body language problems he had was leaning over the lecturn, something I commented on during the debate thread.

The problem with the "wired" theory is that Bush was shaking hands with Kerry before the debate and after, as well as mixing with a lot of his enemies in the post-debate scrum on the stage.

I would think wires going to an ear device would have been obvious at that time and amply exposed by his opponents.

In favour of the "wired" theory is all those blank stares, not lasting more than four seconds as RougeUnderoos pointed out, but suggestive of him listening to someone before embarking on a tack. Then again, maybe he's an idiot or at the least, having a bad day.

There's lots you can pin on Bush but this seems highly unlikely.

Perhaps one of the reason the candidates (maybe just the Bush camp? don't know how they came to their dbeate rules) had wanted only straight face on camera shots before the networks shot that idea down?

I don't really believe this, but the pic is very strange and it would explain a lot of things in Bush's behaviour during the debate.

Don't worry Cow. I don't subscribe to the theory. I don't think Bush was wired. Although that would explain some of his long pauses. We know he can't walk and chew gum at the same time so it is highly doubtful that he can talk and listen at the same time.

Why would it even matter if he was wired or not? Why not use all the technology you can get. We all know Bush is a muppet one way or another.

I think Cheney would make a way better president and bush a VP. they totally have it backwards.

I don't know about the earpiece (that sounds too much like plot from a movie that might star Steve Martin and Darryl Hannah) but I wouldn't be surprised at all if they were giving him a little zap if they thought he was getting into murky territory (also known as "unrehearsed talking").

Could the candidates have been wired with lapelle mics? That could have been a box from the television microphones. Did anyone notice if they were wearing mics on their jackets or ties? There are microphones on the podiums, but those could have been for back up, should the wireless mics fail. Just a thought.

The New York Times has noticed the internet chatter about a wire on Bush.

"There was nothing under his suit jacket," said Nicolle Devenish, a campaign spokeswoman.

"It was most likely a rumpling of that portion of his suit jacket, or a wrinkle in the fabric."

Ms. Devenish could not say why the "rumpling" was rectangular.

Nor was the bulge from a bulletproof vest, according to campaign and White House officials; they said Mr. Bush was not wearing one.

More reaction from the Bush camp today:

"It's not true. It's ridiculous," Bush campaign spokesman Scott Stanzel said.

Campaign officials declined to discuss it further because they weren't certain a bulge even existed and do not want to appear to take seriously what they consider a "wild accusation."

"Some people have been spending too many hours looking at left-wing conspiracy Web sites," Stanzel said. "Did you hear the one about Elvis moderating the third debate?"

I don't know about any "bulge" (well I do know something about bulges in clothing, but that's for another forum) but am I the only one to notice a sort of "elfin" quality to George during the debates? The bad posture is one thing, but combine it with that goofy grin and squinty eyes and he looks almost comical at times. Almost like a caricature of himself.

Maybe it's because Kerry looks like and is as tall as Lurch, but I don't think so. George is a normal sized man but sometimes it looks like he's got a bit of Keebler mixed into his blue blood.
