Pope accused of anti-Islamic remarks

Here we go again. This is an extremely tense time for the world and espeically Islam. If you say anything about Islam that can be deemed to be of a derogatory nature then be prepared for anything... and by saying that i am not saying that free speech should be abandoned, but for a highly charged situation and such a sensitive religion now was not the best time to make these comments.

Those are pretty harsh remarks, not surprised he's getting heat from them. It sounds like something an Islam extremist might say about Christianity. Even on this forum, I think most people know better than to make massive generalizations about the entirety of Islam. Interesting that he's now trying to distance himself from the remarks by saying he was just quoting someone else. That may be so, but when you say that the text you are quoting is the truth about Islam (as he implied), then it's as bad as saying it yourself.

Whatever. The Pope was right. No religion should teach violence. Having parents that come from India, these guys get riled up for anything. There's always an excuse to riot and get politically ****ed at everything. Good to see he wasn't politically correct like most media seems to do.

Yet, when they condem Israel, the west, christianity... it doesn't arouse the anger of the whole community...

Yeah, I mean it's not as though the catholic church has ever advocated violence in the name of religion. Unless you count about a dozen crusades on the arabs, the inquisitions, various persecutions of heretical groups and pagans, the conquistadors, etc.

Ancient history...literally. They've gotten over that now. I guess the next comment will be about little boys, and while it's justified in criticism of handling that issue, it's the few that have done such things that tarnish the image of the whole community. As for your original comment, plain and simple, it's just too old to hold it against them now. While we're at it though, lets call all Germans members of the KKK.

Why is this ancient history? The pope was quoting a text that was 600 years old, so obviously he's still holding a grudge over the initial conflicts between Christianity and Islam. At the time that the text was written, the last crusades were only a hundred years past, the inquisitions were just beginning, the attrocities commited towards the Jews were still pretty fresh, and the killings within the catholic church during the pornocracy were too recent to be forgotten.

How do you know Islam teaches violence? And what does the Pope know exactly about Islam. If he doesn't know exactly what the religion preaches then he shouldn't start quoting other people and like Octothorp said quoting someone is as bad as saying it yourself. So he's really implying that he beleives the quote he is stating. That intices anger and is seen as insulting. Making the remarks is one thing, but insulting a religion is another.

I'm laughing at the fact that some people think the West 'goes too easy' on Islamists. We're out there invading their region and killing them left and right... the West is paying Islamist extremists plenty of attention.
