Calgary Officially One Million??
http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/...6b3f52&k=57221
Welcome to Calgary — population one million.
While the official number determined in the April census is 991,759, Mayor Dave Bronconnier is declaring that with the population growing by 98 people a day, the first baby born after midnight tonight is the city’s millionth resident.
“It’s an important milestone in our history,” Bronconnier said. “What’s happening in Calgary is nothing short of phenomenal.”
Is this a good thing/bad thing?
Pro: more international flights, more entertainment (concerts)
Con: more traffic, more people in the mountains

Too bad the city's road system is only adequate enough to accomodate about 750,000 people.

Not to mention parks, recreation (pools, rinks, etc), education facilities and all the other things that can make a city great. Being able to drive to work is one thing, but I think the quality of living factors don't get nearly as much attention as they should by City Hall anymore.

Time to spin off... everything N. of the river shall henceforth be known as "New Calgary." We'll need a new area code too!

Not sure how valid of a statement this is, but I heard/read somewhere that once a city surpasses the 1 Million in residence, does it not receive more Federal funding for infrastructre, transit,...? So it might be a good thing?

Places like LA and NY dwarf Toronto!
To add to what there's not enough of I've heard there's about 420 police officers shy of the amount that usually is liked, of the public to police ratio.
I heard this from a police man's wife so may not be accurate. Apparently many more are soon to retire too.
Anyway congrats Calgary

I think that was the metropolitan area. So including Airdrie, Okotoks, Strathmore, etc.
Also we have been over 950K within city limits, so it has been very common to refer to ourselves as a city of 1 million.

That's sad when you consider that there's cities in the states like Minneapolis-St. Paul which have 3 million population but have nowhere near the traffic problems Calgary has (I can't speak for Vancouver, I've never driven rush hour there).

Given that Calgary will only be the third city in Canada with +1 million people, I wold suspect such a policy is for metro population rather than city population. If that is the case, Calgary would have begun to receive that extra funding a few years ago.
Also, speaking of rapid growth, according to the 1978 Encyclopedia Britannica, Airdrie had a population of ~670 at that time. This years census put it over 29,000. The entire Calgary Metro is probably pushing 1.25 million by now.

Thats crazy, before I left Airdire in 93 the population was around 10,000. Calgary and area seem to be booming. Might have to add a few more to Cowtown, me and the wife are gonna move back in a year or two.

I don't find Calgary to have too bad of a traffic problem. Thier Trasit system seems to be effective ant it is really easy to get around in. I was in Toronto back in 99 now there is rush hour traffic. 40? (7 i believe) Richmond Hill - Gardner Express Way was packed. What usually took me about 15-20 minutes to get downtown took me about 2.5 hours.

Actually, Calgary Metro doesnt include Okotoks, the MD of Foothills or anything south of the city for some ridiculous reason. I suspect StatsCan will revise Calgary's metro as of next years census.

Shouldn't have left, it'll cost you a lot more to buy a house now than it did then!

I moved in 2003 from Calgary. To think the city had just come around to 900,000 and change at that point. I have to admit, everytime I come home the place looks different, and to put on 100,000 people in just three years is nothing short of freakishly unbelievable.
And to think I sold my condo in Kensington shortly afterwards, instead of holding onto it like a smart person.....
One million is a nice milestone, and for all of you who complain about the lack of services, let me say it's no where near the 18 million that inhabit the Megaopolis....
Traffic Jams

Don't like the roads, try the train (rush hour on the Yamanote line - the main line in Tokyo - thankfully I don't use it to get to work)

And once you're off the trains and out of your car, you can join the madding crowd in Shibuya for some fun.

When it's all said and done here, though, I really do like Tokyo. It's insane what people will get used to, really.

4th for metropolitan.
Perhaps 5th if Ottawa is over a million?
