Default Calgary parking hits $375/month

"Parking in Calgary is more expensive than anywhere else in Canada. A survey by real estate services firm Colliers International this week says a typical parking spot in Calgary costs $375 a month. A similar spot in Toronto is about $300 a month. Calgary's thriving economy is driving up the demand for office space and that affects the cost of parking, said Keith Reading, a spokesman for Colliers.

The creation of more private and city-owned above-ground parking lots would help, but Reading says most of that space has disappeared."

The City has always had a deliberate strategy to limit the # of parking spaces downtown to limit the strain on roads leading in, but the lack of spaces to build parkades is true too - all those lots in Eau Claire are now worksites - there's just not that much bare land.

I think the story's a little skewed though, $375 is probably for underground secured in a office tower. Park on the south side of the tracks and walk a bit - I think spaces can be had for about $200 or so. Lots of early bird non reserved spots are around for what, $14 a day? (300 a month)

Before we get a ton of replies on this I'll say it now - we all know that transit sucks right now, and that capacity and comfort just aren't there at rush hour. Although I tend to blame the Province more for that as you can't build what you don't have money for.

Thankfully, I walk to work. We debated moving to the burbs but figured a 2nd car would be needed. We then figured out how much we'd spend in a month on car payments, insurance, and parking and if you add that to your mortgage payment you'd be surprised at how much more you can afford housing wise. (Not that inner city life is for everyone though)

Good God.... $375/month? Why not just move a bed into the stall and live there?

the story seems to be slightly skewed... I pay $190 for my gated lot.
At the same time, my dads reserved parking spot in bankers hall is about $400/month.

I don't understand why anyone would waste money on parking downtown. Parking my bike is free.

The parking regime of Calgary = The government regime in 1939 Germany.

I bet the parking spot at Banker's Hall has always been about that much. There have always been some "premium" parking lots downtown that have been expensive since time eternal.

Is it a one-bedroom? Those are pretty cheap right now. It's the two-bedrooms and above that are very expensive.

So do card lock doors for the bike cages in the secured and CCTV monitored parking garages of many downtown buildings.

I'd be curious if it truly is $400 still...that now seems rather cheap for an underground spot...perhaps it's part of the lease agreement Talisman (or whoever his Dad works for) has with the property mgmt co.

Depends. I've always been a situation where I need my car, either for work itself or because I had hockey right after or something.

Now I'm in a situation where I work in 3 different locations and in order to get to everywhere I need in time I need my car.

Thankfully one of my jobs is in Ramsey (free parking) and the other is in the beltline area where I seem to have lucked out and found a street they don't patrol. 6 months now and not a single ticket!

375 is probably fair as an average or something. There will be lots higher than that for sure.

About 2 months ago the city extended it's restricted parking area from a few blocks around the train lines to pretty much all of downtown. That ought to help.

I'm not a fan but I get that there's a philosophical position there that some people will agree with. But with already more workers than we can get in and out of downtown and more workers coming, it's going to get ugly.

I don't see the provinces role in this at all though. City planning. City policies. City financial decisions. Resources are not an issue.
