anyone else check this flick out? i haven't had a movie that made me think this much in a long time. basically it focuses on the shadiness and backroom deals of international oil, but that doesn't even begin to cover it. after watching this movie it put a stark realization in my mind of just how much the oil industry relies on corruption for the bottom line, and what eventually allows all of us in this province to enjoy the current boom we're in

I'll have to check it out, I haven't seen a 'feel-good' movie in some time.

rofl, i wouldn't quite call it a "feel good" movie, more like a "what an entirely ****ed up planet we live on" movie

I'll turn my sarcasm meter up for ya next time... Thought it was funny since you mentioned that that such practices were why we were able to live so well here in Alberta.

Movies like that if you want to check em out: Lord of War, about international arms dealing. And The Constant Gardener. This one I haven't seen though it's on my list with Syriana, I believe it's about drug companies testing their stuff on people in Africa.

So both along the same lines, big business and big government using other countries and cultures.

yes, Lord of War is an awesome movie. and i've been meaning to check out Constant Gardener but have never gotten around to it. Traffic is also very awesome (same director as Syriana)

and ya, as soon as i posted that reply my first thought was "wait a minute...". would have helped if you had some sort of smilely in there

Hotel Rwanda really leaves you staggering. About a hotel hanager who tries to hide over 1200 Tutsi refurgees in his five star hotel to save them from massacre at the hands of Hutu militia during the 1994 Hutu-Tutsi civil war in Africa.

It's a real eye-opener about the worlds apathy to third world events.

My favorite quote: "I think if people see this footage, they'll say 'Oh, my God, that's horrible,' and then they'll go on eating their dinners."

One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Clooney was great. I was really hoping it would have won best picture. What's scary about it, its based on the life of a real operative and his experiences as a spook. The operative never met the same end as Clooney's character, but he says it was fantasy based on reality.

Editted for an obvious brain fart for anyone who has not seen the movie.

Syriana's directed by the writer of Traffic.

And it's very, very good.

Thanks for the ending Lanny

I "borrowed" this movie from the internet but it was missing subtitles. Got about halfway through.

If you liked Hotel Rwanda, check out Sometimes in April - also dealing with the Rwandan genocide. It deals more with the personal side of the tragedy...Given that I have family who lived in Rwanda through the genocide, this one really hit home...

I thought it was really good too. It's not a movie for people who have no clue what's going on outside of their neighborhood though. You have to have some knowledge of 'current' events or you'll be completely lost.

I thought Matt Damon was good too. In fact, I think Matt Damon is an underrated actor.

That's not exactly what I was talking about, but I didn't find the movie to fall into the 'conspiracy theory' realm, at least as I define it.

As to my comment, I was simply pointing out that if you want to understand the film you'd better be paying attention to things outside of your neighborhood and be at least somewhat familiar with world geography, economy and current events.

That's unbelievable. I can't even begin to comprehend experiencing that sort of situation first hand. I'll look for 'Sometimes in April.' Thanks for the suggestion.

Syriana was a really good movie. You could sure see Steven Soderbergh's influence in the movie as it reminded me of Traffic in its style and ability to tell a story.

Unfortunately, the message of the movie will be lost on too many people.

I spent most of the movie wondering where I recognized the Prince from.
