War of 1812 I think.
But to be historically accurate, it was the British that defeated the U.S.. Canada was not a nation or a country at the time, although it is fun to take credit. :P

It was actually more of a stalemate... the US burned York (T.O.), Britain burned Washington, and pretty back and forth. The thing is the US force outnumbered the British regulars and Canadian militia about 5 to 1. Interesting little skirmish, but not a wasting by any means.

The U.S. failed in it's objective of annexing Canada, and in fact lost territory that was later returned when peace was made. I would say that is more than a stalemate.
I read that the reason the U.S. allowed themselves to be outnumbered is because they expected the people in Canada to "dancing in the streets", to use a poor cliche.

We were still a British colony back then, so yes it was technically the British that the Americans were fighting, but the soldiers would have been the people living here at the time, who would eventually become Canadians.

I would wager that most occupying soldiers in Canada at that time were from Britain and would have only been stationed in Canada temporarily, and later moved back to Britain or to another colony.

The War of 1812 is pretty much unknown to most Americans and the ones who do know about it think the US won it so if you tried to bug them about it you would probably just get weird looks.

The British/Canadian army only had a core of the elite British redcoated infantry. A large part of the force was made up of French Canadian regulars.
The British won all of the land battles except for the last big one, The Battle of New Orleans. Basically the British had a large, battle hardened force against a well entrenched auxillary American force. The British marched up the hill and were slaughtered.
The Americans won all of the naval frigate battles except for the last one when the American navy was almost crippled.
