Default Big Plans for Dubai

Wow, there must just be money to burn there. This link is to a slideshow put together of upcoming attractions in Dubai. Dubai's crown prince, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has set a national goal of attracting 15 million tourists in 2010. Just click the pictures along the botton to see everything.

Does the idea of an underwater luxury hotel in the Persian Gulf strike anyone else as just a little bit dangerous?

I can't imagine anything that says "western luxury and decadence and corruption and money" louder than an underwater luxury hotel in the Persian Gulf.

I overnight in Dubai every six weeks, and I gotta say that that place is crazy......I once tried to count the number of sky cranes...lost track at around 50. The population there is about 70% Indian, 25% Philipino and the rest being Arab.......very wierd city. I went to have a look at the indoor ski hill, I have never laughed so hard seeing a lady clad in a burka ripping down the hill with her black 'dress' billowing out behind her

How long until some of the surrounding countries get jealous and start targeting attacks towards the UAE and their western style opulence?

I think some people might also be surprised at how culturally diverse Dubai is.

More than half the population of the city are not Arabs, which might not be recognized by many people given the name of the country.

Dubai is an amazing city. The size and scope of many of the projects there are just staggering. Some may call it a waste of money, but the projects being built are just remarkable.

BTW, the only "proclaimed" 7-star hotel in the world is located in Dubai, called the Burj Al Arab. Check out the website and some of the pictures to be seriously impressed.

I'll tell you what though, Dubai isn't a city for those just getting by. The city is flowing with money.

That show called Hockey Nomad where they follow this guy who shows where hockey is prevalent in different countries, well they had an episode in the UAE in Dubai, where some of the Arab people there picked up the game and started playing. When they were done they showed them leaving the parking lot and pulling out in their Ferraris.

The UAE is definately on my wish list as places to visit.

They are the Dubai Mighty Camels. this from an article out of the hotel room magazine when I was there.

Its fabulous place to visit. The definition of opulence! Amazing beaches, some beautiful historical architecture mixed in with the modern. Highly recomended, just don't eat the camel

I've never been, but my boss has a friend down there and I've heard stories.

Opulent YES! However there seems to be a lot of old and royalty money down there. Don't know what this means for future generations, or should the oil ever run out (or become obsolete).

Not a Christian fellow at all, but almost seems like a new Babylon. What will happen to it in 100 years? Money beacause of priviledge...

I think that's why we're seeing such large projects funded by the UAE government. I'm pretty sure they'd like tourism to ideally take over as one of their main industries if oil does ever run out.

Yea, I saw that show and was pretty amazed. They absolutely LOVE the game (at least the 20-30 arabs that were playing it), and they couldn't wait to get back on the ice. They all arrived in Arabic robes and headdresses with tiny sandles on, and the next thing you know they are taking slapshots. The crowd's seats were all made of gold and persian rug. Awesome place. Alot safer than it should be apparently. I got a buddy that's parents go there a couple times a year. (they live in Saudi on business)
