St. Louis Blues - State of the Union
From the Desk of GM NoPants
For Immediate Release:
First off, I'd like to express my appreciation to the fans of the St. Louis Blues franchise. After an exciting run to the Conference Finals in 2002-2003, our club missed the playoffs for two consecutive years. This season has been full of ups and downs, but based on our TV ratings and mechandise sales, you have allowed us back into your homes and into your hearts.
Thank you.
When accepting this job at the end of 2004-2005, I made it very clear that our goal was to be a playoff team this season, but that we would not mortgage our future to attain this goal. As of today, we are on target to succeed these goals. However, our position in the standings is precarious to say the least, as we are only 1 point up on the Hawks, with three other teams within 5 points.
On a positive note, we are only 4 points back of the Blue Jackets and Wild for the Makita Division lead.
Many of you have been asking if and when we will join in the flurry of trade activity throughout the CPHL. In truth, we simply don't know. As you all know, this is the time of year when teams attempt to determine whether they are "buyers" or "sellers". I would hesitate to lump our club in either category, at least for now. If we make trades today to help solidify a playoff berth, we'll no doubt need to part with some of our future. If we sell off our established players to teams looking for a playoff advantage, we'd be giving up on our goals.
So, for the time being at least, we will only make a move if it supports what we've said all year long. Nothing but the playoffs will be considered a success. We feel we have the players to accomplish this goal. Once we get there, anything can happen.
We have a winning record at home, a winning record within our conference, a tremendous 4-1-6 record in OT, and we're 6-3-1 in our last 10 games. While our overall record could be better, these stats are the sign of a potentially dangerous playoff team.
All we need to do is get there. And get there we will.
