Unsuspecting Woman Brutally Stabbed In Neck
https://www.gbnews.com/news/us/north...arlos-brown-jr
23 year old woman was murdered in cold blood yesterday on the train in North Carolina. She entered the train, sat in her seat, and was looking at her phone when suddenly a man behind her stood up unprovoked and stabbed her in the neck.
Reminiscent of the Greyhound bus attack. Was gonna put this in that thread but couldn’t find it.

This doesn't remind me of the Greyhound thing at all. It reminds me of all the other equally tragic random killings that are happening.

Sadly, events like this happen all the time.
Even in Canada; there were a few similar random stabbing murders in Vancouver last year.
I guess you could make an "Ongoing Random Murder Thread" but not sure if this one caught your attention for any particular reason more than all of the others?
When I clicked the thread, I assumed it was Calgary news.

It happened in August, about 2.5 weeks ago.
You're only hearing about it now because people are spreading the video of a poor girl getting murdered to further a political agenda.

I feel myself generally torn on this, obviously these events become news because they have huge effects on many peoples lives beyond typical day to day life. But on the other hand I think that news as snuff porn has contributed greatly to people having a very skewed view of the world. People think the world is a more dangerous place, and that all of these problems are rampant because they open up a news page and it's all they see, but it's just not supported statistically.
Basically my favorite thing about following world events on Calgary puck vs other places is that it can be somewhat eclectic in the stories it chooses to dwell on.

Murders happen every day. I'm not really sure what makes this one especially newsworthy?

Just out of curiosity, is there another way to be stabbed in the neck other than "brutally"? Like can you be gracefully stabbed in the neck?

What am I missing about this and what are we trying to say here? Are we upset and saying this is a politically motivated attack because it was a random Ukrainian, are we aghast at the brutality, what about this particular murder stands out that demands additional examination and discussion outside of "damn that sucks"?

If they are happening every day and as such are common place what would be the criteria for any particular murder being newsworthy?

An estimated 10% of murders are random, whereas 90% happen with the victim/assailant knowing each other.
I assume "random" murders involve people living "high-risk" lifestyles: homelessness/prostitution etc. I also assume most random murders do not happen as publicly.
So, its statistically significant, at least.

Quick google says 43 murders per day in the US. So let's say four are random. The setting, on a public train, I guess makes this one stand out.
Of course it's a tragedy and extremely traumatic for that person's loved ones.

That 1 in 10 are people who didn’t previously know each other - doesn’t make them random attacks. It includes violence between rival gangs, people who get into bar fights, road rage incidents that escalate, etc.
The unprovoked murder of criminally unaffiliated people going about their day-to-day lives in public spaces by strangers is really, really rare. Not so rare that we should expect it should always be national news in a country like the USA. But it isn’t necessarily evidence of a political agenda at work when it is. If a mom who was shopping at Lululemon got stabbed to death in the Chinook mall parking lot by some deranged passerby, it would 100 per cent be national news across Canada, carried by CBC, CTV, the Globe & Mail, etc.

But it would be in the news that day not a week later. That this is taking off later suggests that there is some artificial amplification going on.

This barely made any national news at the time...

There is definitely some agenda at play here with the current coverage.

There's been a fair number of random knife attacks in Vancouver lately:
https://vpd.ca/news/2025/05/15/51890/
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/briti...idge-1.7589785
https://vpd.ca/news/2024/09/04/vpd-a...ranger-attack/
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cq624628gj5o
Only one death in there, but it seems like a growing problem to me. All of these incidents in just over a year, and I'm sure my list isn't exhaustive.

Read a couple of articles in amercain media about this, and the official response from the mayor to the president, so far, is thoughts and prayers.
A lot of times, there will be a problem that is not getting coverage, until a face is put on the issue. See George Floyd.
