Backlund extension as well
Quote:
Chatting with Flames captain Mikael Backlund in Milan 10 days ago, it is clear he is confident he will be sticking around Calgary after his current contract expires. There’s work to be done, but an extension, at some point, seems expected.

2028/29 could be a pretty tough year to manage cap-wise for the Flames.

They'll still have Kadri and Huberdeau on the books as potentially pretty bad contracts, and whomever else they sign (or re-sign... Frost, Klapka etc) as they enter the competitive window, and they will have Zary, Farabee, Parekh, Basha, Battaglia, Honzek, Gridin and Morin all expiring then.

Obviously, those guys won't all pan out or need massive raises, and maybe a couple will be traded, but that will be tough to navigate, especially if a few of those guys turn into stars and if the Flames have an internal cap they need to follow.

Zary is 24 in Sept, so a three year deal walks him directly to UFA at 27.

I think 3 of those guys will get a ELC slide as they are 19.

I don't see an issue unless someone is much better than expected. Parekh is likely the only guy that could get $10M.

If all those guys play in the next 3 years, Kadri will be gone.

I think only Battaglia is heading back to junior and Parekh, Basha and Gridin are going pro, so I don't think their contracts will slide.

But yeah, it might not be an issue -- and if it is, it's probably not a bad issue as the Flames will have some breakout depth. It's just why I was hoping for a bit of a longer term contract for Zary, like Coronato, so that the Flames could use some of their current cap space to offset their future cap.

Three years is a good enough amount if time to figure out if we care. I personally think Zary is going to take a big step this year. He was doing it last season but all of the injuries crushed it.

He will have a chip on his shoulder looking at Coronato’s contract.

What I'm saying is a three-year deal right now buys exactly 0 UFA years. He can go to arb to force a one-year deal and then he's gone.

I'm a huge fan of wrapping players up long term over the bridge deal. I really like Zary, but I don't see the numbers coming in that will break the bank in his next contract. I think Coronato has more potential to put up the points to get a big raise after a bridge deal.

I just don't see w huge risk with Zary.

I still think we have seen enough to take a chance on an 8 year deal. It wouldn't be the Coronato deal, because he hasn't shown that level of production, and there is some injury risk, but 8 X $6.25M would be a great compromise.
