Default Selective abortion: 10 million girls 'missing' in India

Quote:
Around 10 million female foetuses may have been aborted in India over the past two decades because of ultrasound sex screening and a traditional preference for boys, according to a study published online in The Lancet.
Girls not wanted in India?

What do you make of this? Certainly we know that the desire to have boys in Indian culture is huge...but do you think this number is accurate?
What is the root cause of this issue?
What will they do when only men are left? Ugh...nasty thought.

I always thought the root cause that boys would be able to help with labour and help support the family?

Women do the majority of "manual" labour in the "3rd World".

How do you know this? I always find statements like this fairly ignorant. One of my friends father (born in India immigrated early 90's) as well as my friend (to a lesser extent only lived a few years there before moving) is very adment about the stereotype againts the "3rd World" that they are sexist and are all extremists in their religions he says its almost 100 percent americanized in larger cities even some having gay bars, as well as technology used in farming and women politicians in the local polotics. Women can also have jobs in more urban areas (you have to admit that there are some very redneck areas in N.A. where men don't allow there wives to work due to their beliefs) He also has 5 sisters and only one brother and doesn't know of any of his friends parents ever complaining about having more daughters than sons. He gave me a very long and in depth lecture about this once after watching a documentary on the news that made it look like they were still in the cavemen ages over there. Just because the American media (who is also in war with some of these "3rd world" countries) makes them out to be dogs doesn't make it true.

I think you misinterpreted my statement. This is a very simple fact, easily found in social science reading, I can also back it up with my experiences spent in various parts of the third world.

I didn't mean to generalize and lump in every single developing nation into this statement. However, certain parts of India are very sexist, as this article by itself shows.

I understand what your getting at, I won't deny that the "third world" countries are definetely harder for women to live in than N.A. It just sounded like you were painting it with a big wide brush and that irks me more than anything else. Sorry for coming off as an *******.

I also thought it was widely known that this happened. Apparently, you can't ask a doctor in Vancouver what sex the baby is before they're born, whereas it's common practice in Calgary.

That's true. My nephews were all gender surprises. My brother-in-law and sister-in-law were not able to know the sex of the baby before birth.

It is worse in China, especially in rural areas. People are kidnapping women and selling them off to these guys.

With the one-child policy they have created a nightmare while halting the massive population growth.

Quite few asian societies are like this. But since India and China are so huge it is magnified.

The study is disputed by a top Indian doctor:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/4601184.stm

Another, in-depth, article on this topic.

http://www.indiatogether.org/2003/aug/wom-sexratio.htm

The obvious riddle is that women will eventually become scarcer . . . . yet men need women to have more boys, yet they want boys not women to be born.

Isn't there also an inference that a population imbalance like this, weighted towards hordes of men, could lead to conflict either internally or regionally?

Well we have more women than men in the "first world" so maybe it'll balance out in the end? East Indian guys marrying Caucasian gals in mass ceremonies? haha

In Lethbridge if you want to find out you have to pay $150, or go to Calgary.
