I also share your concern about the transition game with that defence. However, on the other hand, I also remember the transition game under Hartley's Flames and how fast it was, even though after Brodie, Giordano and Wideman, there wasn't much skill there either. I think if the Flames play fast and have the mindset to move the puck forward ASAP, it could work.

Weegar, Miromanov, Andersson and Barrie should all be fairly good at it, and if the other D at least move move the puck up (and the forwards are able to give them an open target), it could be better than we think.

Defending is what I am most worried about. I can see a lot of clean breakaways against, as well as odd-man rushes, guys getting out of position trying to cover the same opponent, etc.

Going to be an interesting season at worst, and a fun season at best, even if the results add up to a lot more losing than winning.

They beat our D and got behind them fairly easily up ice to get a bunch of in close chances.

Question - is there a breakdown of fancy stats by period? I’d like to see if the bad numbers for the Flames are skewed by the first period.

Agree with you about the Vancouver crowd. What a bunch of morons. I don’t recall hearing a crowd full out chanting a guys name after clearly concussing an opponent. Had a real Bertuzzi/Moore vibe.

I think that stuff will get cleaned up. We have a bunch of new guys on D.

Even noticeably better in the second half of the game.

If you take the first period out the Flames were much better and the third period only looks like that because of the Canucks push at the end

They'll probably swap Barrie in a bit more if that transition game continues to be a problem, no?

Only was able to watch the highlights but Silovs still can't track pucks from the point. He is not a NHL level goaltender from what I have seen.

Yup. The book on Silovs is that he struggles with shots from further out. And last night he let in 3 wrist shots from distance (or was it 4?). Every team in the league will have taken note and will be sending in shots from the point all night on him.

The Nucks are in trouble until they get Demko back. I have said for a while that he covers a LOT of warts on that team, and I think we are going to see that, for the next while.

Hughes is good. They have some snipers. But they rode a crazy shooting percentage last year, along with lights-out goaltending, for an absolutely ridiculous - and unsustainable - PDO.

Now we are going to see what they look like without that PDO heater.

I don't know why Canuck fans are so high on Silovs. It doesn't matter if he saved five high danger chances if he is continually letting in really bad goals. That was his MO in the playoffs and while it is only one game this season it sure looks like a recurring theme.

The Canucks season lives or dies on Demkos health, which is the same for most teams and their number one goaltender but Demko looks awfully fragile right now.

Fun game to watch, both were very messy to say the least.

Canucks goalie struggled, could be an issue if they don't get their #1 back

Flames center position is going to be an issue, would guess Rooney is out for a bit with an concussion

WHo does he replace? Bahl? Thought he was the worst player on the backend last night. Big, slow, and out of position and chasing.

Bahl had a bad first but was good in the final 40 IMO.

Really seemed to settle down and use his size / length better in the final 40. Made the great play to keep the puck in on the 5-4 goal too.

Personally I haven't really seen a spot for Barrie going back to training camp and am still not sure why they even signed him.

And his catchphrase, spoken in a ridiculously mournful voice whenever anything went horribly wrong, was, ‘Wowsy, wowsy, woo woo!’
