Yeah happy for him. Can't imagine he had any leverage for a one way deal but it's just money so who knows.

Definitely still rooting for him to somehow make it. If anything, he seems like the type of player that brings the best out of prospects at the AHL level.

lol I am looking towards all of the hand wringing if either him or Kylington pop on the Avs. I thought Phillips would end up in Europe though.

One way? That would be a pretty dumb move on the Avs part.
I'm assuming 2 way deal with maybe guaranteed 300k in minors.

The Avs clearly looked at Florida and thought they wouldn't have won the Cup without some former Flames in the lineup, so they needed to add some of their own.

I don’t really see a world where he “pops” at this point. If he can’t do anything with Ovechkin and Malkin then it’s hard to imagine he’ll do much offensively elsewhere, and the Avs team plays quite a bit heavier, so it’s hard to see where he’d even fit.
Hope he comes back and plays out his career on the Wranglers, selfishly. Great AHL player.

Oh I agree, I’ve never been that high on Philips but maybe people have given up on the idea he is a top 6 guy.

Not dumb at all, if it's below the threshold to bury it in the minors with no cap hit. Quite often with very good AHL players, the NHL team offers them a one-way or a higher AHL salary to convince them to sign, rewarding them to play on the farm team and make it better.

It's not like exposing him to waivers poses any long term risk.

Powerplay Quarterback
|
This is probably the chance that lil Matty has been waiting for.
The Avs' 12th and 13th forward spots are legitimately vacant/up for grabs, their farm team has no depth up front, there's no clear preference for grinding forwards from the coaching staff (unlike in WSH), and he's surrounded by a couple Calgary boys and familiar faces.
Hopefully he's ready to seize the opportunity.

He needs to achieve journeyman status before departing for Europe. So I'm on board with this signing.

Not dumb, so long as the owner is willing to pay the salary.
Only 700k, and it looks like it's a two way deal anyway but signing someone to a 1 way deal you can fully bury in the minors doesn't really impact the main roster or cap in any significant way.

More than I thought. Assumed he'd head overseas.
He'll be spending most, if not all of it with the Colorado Eagles. That AHL rate is comparable to the Swiss National League.
