The Los Angeles Kings have signed forward Alex Turcotte to a three-year, $2.325 million contract extension with an average annual value of $775,000.
Great contract for the Kings, the entire value can be buried in the AHL. Strange contract for Turcotte to sign.

That is a very weird term for that type of AAV

Three year league minimum? That is odd

I think it is a smart contract to sign. Gives him 3 years to hopefully stay healthy and take that next step. He will be cheap to call-up. This is all about getting a 3-year look at getting himself back on track.

I guess. He is a guy I would have had no problem with Conroy signing to a two year 2.5 million dollars deal (1.25 per). I might be crazy but I feel like his agent almost certainly left money on the table.

I dunno... I assume it's 1 way so it makes him 2M dollars and he isn't a guarantee to be in the NHL. That's a lot of money for regular people so he gets some financial security and the Kings get a great deal on the backend if he can get himself back on track.

If it is a one way contract that type of money can set him up for the rest of his life in many ways so I can see the appeal. Plus the low cap hit makes him more appealing for staying on a NHL roster giving him some time to show his abilities and hopefully get a big contract in a few years time.

Having never really watched him as a player (as no one here has) I don't know if he is trending towards being a potentially useful player or a high draft picks that was never able to take the next step.

I really do not understand why the player would want to do this. Just sign a 1 year league min or take your QO. If you break out and score even .5 ppg which isn't impossible with his tools you're way ahead. The only upside here is that if you wind up a career AHLer after this season you get an extra few hundred grand to live on, but even there, surely some other team wants to try their hand at developing him even if the Kings give up, due to his pedigree.

I don't get it.

I think the idea is to be more attractive to stay with the big club compared to 1M plugs. And if he hits waivers he definitely gets claimed.

It is a bit of a strange contract. This contract make Turcotte seem like a guy that just wants to concentrate on hockey and sticking in the league. It's 1-way, which takes away some of the pressure of being sent down.

If he outperforms the contract by becoming a 0.5PPG player then he likely losses a couple of Million as a result, but this way he doesn't have to worry about getting paid 70-90K in the AHL for a couple of years. Maybe he needs the cash so he can help out a family member, buy a house, or pursue an investment opportunity.

Moreover, I think this makes him an even more valuable target in trade or if he hits waivers, so he gets to a place with a bigger opportunity sooner.

Huh? He's played in the AHL for four seasons and has played in the NHL including against the Flames. Not sure why you think no one here has seen him.

I would imagine he's looking for security and a chance to prove himself. Over the last 4 seasons, he's played 32, 35, 36, and 55 games. He hasn't hit PPG in the AHL. He's got 1 goal and 4 points in 32 career NHL games. If he hadn't been drafted 5th overall 5 years ago, no one would be thinking this was weird.

Three year deals at the league minimum are quite rare and weird. From the players perspective, at this stage in his career, it makes no sense.

Capfriendly shows that only the second and third years of the deal are one-way. For '24-25, Turcotte's AHL salary is only $150,000.

Which, if accurate, makes it even weirder.

CF says it's one way for the first year, then two way. But really, these days, and after tax, 2.3M won't set up a 23 year old person for life. He will see half of it, then he has to pay to live in LA. To me this is a "I know I'm looking like a flop but give me a couple more years basically on an ELC".

First sign of trouble after being drafted our of the USHL - he and a guy drafted 10 spots later go to the same NCAA team and the latter (Cole Caulfield) outscores him by 10 points.

LA is in a weird spot, people accuse the Flames of being mediocre but they are about as mediocre as it gets

I realize they won 2 cups a decade ago no need to remind me fyi
