Default Pete Rose has passed away

Pete Rose died today. 83 years old. His legacy was surely tainted by his actions. He never really got onto the whole thing. Great baseball athlete, questionable ethics at best. Nevertheless, when I was a kid he was a baseball superhero.

RIP Pete. Too bad you couldn’t acknowledge your past sins and move past them.

I find it fascinating that a guy who had 160 career home runs and 198 stolen bases had 135 career triples. Also had 746 career doubles. Once the ball was in play he was giving 'er. Unfortunate he could never reconcile with Baseball.

It's ancient history, and I'm not saying that because the guy is dead now, but I'm not sure why him and MLB couldn't reconcile at some point. While I've never liked Clemens, or Bonds or any of those other rumoured roided guys, I think we can acknowledge that a huge chunk of guys during that time were on it. Surely they care about their legacy and have big egos to admit to these things but if down the road any of them get in, I won't be annoyed as I was 20 years ago. Same principle with Rose. He was before my time but he had a reputation for being a competitor. He got caught doing something stupid. But to make an example of a guy who was probably among the first to get caught, to this day is utterly stupid.

Yeah I think he basically thumbed his nose at MLB in the later years and wanted no part of any reconciling no matter what.

What's that sports memorabilia shop in Caesars Palace Forum Shoppes going to do? Rose was in there seemingly two weekends a month or more the last 20 years.

The guy was a fantastic baseball player and one of the more entertaining athletes to play MLB. Unfortunately that's often overshadowed by his gambling addiction but he was pretty unapologetic right to the very end.

Didn't he rape a 14 year old? I'm not sure this is bad news, guy seems to have been a real POS, gambling or no.

At least he lived long enough to see North American professional sports sell out completely to legalized gambling.

...I have no idea what point I'm trying to make. I just found it interesting when I read the news today.

He was an awful person off the field between that and his tax evasion issues. Story there was that he had an affair with a girl in Ohio in the 70's when he was 34. Turns out the girl was under 16 which was the age of consent at the time. His claim is that he didn't know she was that young at the time and the case did not get brought forth until many years later. Still pretty creepy for a guy that age to be looking a barely teens...even in that era.
