Friedman believes Connie and Maloney have been extended.

Also speculates that Sutter will be back (on his existing 2-year extension, $4M per year salary), and that Treliving is taking his time to make a decision on returning or not.

I would take this as the Flames are very much trying to extend Treliving, and the ball is in Tree's court. This is what we've heard pretty much all season too.

Why would you extend the assistants with the GM position being so uncertain?

If the plan was to move on - wouldn't you think the best course of action would be to allow the new GM the ability to select his own staff?

On one hand, I can't blame the owner. If I was an owner, I would 1000% meddle in the personnel decisions. I love hockey too much.

On the other hand, he should trust his hockey people and frig off.

It's odd for sure. I think, if true, it's one of two things:

Treliving has also agreed to extend in principle and they are either just keeping quiet or there are still some terms to work out.

Or one of the people extended was extended as GM, and not AGM.

Seems weird that a new GM wouldn't be allowed to bring in his own assistants, so this has me leaning towards Treliving coming back now.

The alternative is a bad timeline, though.

I wonder if Tree is holding out for a new coach? I assume Sutter was an Owners' hire, and will also need to be an Owners'... un-hire.

Honestly, all season long, I've gotten a very "Moneyball" feeling with regards to the relationship between Tree and Sutter. Tree building a roster and calling guys up, and Sutter refusing to play them.

I have zero evidence, mind you. Not even hearsay. Just the F in my ENFP personality doing F things.

Wonder if Edwards would entertain keeping Sutter on staff as an expensive senior adviser and promote Love to head coach.

Get a new voice and approach, but some experience in the wings.
