Suddenly hot Flames, Ducks face off in SoCal

Two teams in the midst of a revival meet Thursday when the Anaheim Ducks play host to the Calgary Flames.

Both teams have won consecutive games after losing streaks. The Ducks have rallied back after losing five consecutive games and 13 of 14 going back to Nov. 15. The Flames were on a four-game losing streak and had dropped six of their previous seven before their back-to-back wins.

5 Things - Flames @ Ducks - 21.12.23

2. Know Your Enemy
The Ducks head into the battle following a four-game road swing which saw them finish 2-2, picking up back-to-back wins to wrap up the trip.

Their latest victory came Monday in Detroit, as they held on for a 4-3 decision. They led 4-1 heading into the final five minutes of regulation before the Wings pushed back with a pair of late goals, but the Ducks were able to shut it down to secure the two points.

Radko Gudas, Pavel Mintyukov, Adam Henrique and Troy Terry provided the offence while Lukas Dostal made 32 stops.

FlamesNation Mailbag: Talking trade targets, arena chatter, and turkey or ham

We’re a week away from the National Hockey League’s holiday break, and we’re still waiting for the Calgary Flames to either claw their way into a playoff spot or completely fall out. We may be waiting for awhile on that front, folks.
But as we wait for Santa to break into our homes to eat our snacks and leave us gifts, let’s check in with the mailbag!

Pacific Power Rankings, Week 10: One thing on every team’s holiday wish list
alt

The holiday season is here and the NHL is just days away from the Christmas Trade Freeze and break. We’re also getting into the holiday spirit this week by taking a look at what each team in the Pacific Division has on their holiday wish list to help their chances heading into the 2024 portion of the schedule.

Curse is long dead, and this is very winnable with the way the Flames are playing. So win they will.

Every time someone here says "This team is a pushover so it's a guaranteed Flames win", we get our asses handed to us. It's bad ju-ju.

Happened to see the team boarding their plane yesterday. Hrudey on color it seems and Maloney traveling with the team. Not newsworthy really but a little interesting.

Backlund in line behind me at Starbucks and I wondered for a second if he had been traded before seeing the rest of them.

I would love to see a multi goal game from Zary at some point with all this momentum he’s built up. Some more offence from the back end is also fun to watch. Go Flames!

Tanev’s blocked shots seem different to me than Russell’s. Russell’s seemed like he’d block a shot, lose the puck and block again. Tanev doesn’t lose the puck and generally clears well.

Coleman and Mangiapane should switch lines. Coleman has some pretty good chemistry with Sharangovich, and Mangiapane could spark the Backlund line.

I hope the Flames take the Ducks seriously, and keep playing like they did against top opponents. ANA's lineup doesn't look very scary especially with Zegras and McTavish out.

The pacific being as weak as it is really doesn't help the tank.

A really good article discussing Zary's work on his skating, and his hockey IQ.

Quote:
“I’ve heard that my whole life — that I won’t be fast enough, that I’m going to have to catch up, that my skating is not good enough,” Zary said.

“Strength and power go hand-in-hand,” Fujita explained. “For Connor, it was a combination of spending time on his technique and efficiency — because he was lacking on both — and then spending time in the gym and getting that strength built up.

“Now that he’s put in time in the gym and on the ice, now they’re there. I’ll tell you, and he will admit, he still has work to do with me. He still has goals to reach and things to accomplish, but he is well on his way. He’s making a career in the NHL. Now, it’s my job to work with him to sustain that career.”

There is no tank. Tanking is deliberately trying to lose whether that's the GM or the coach/players. Even if Conroy trades all of the UFAs that's not tanking. It's just managing expiring assets properly.

The team is still obviously trying to win. Whether they can win enough to get into the playoffs is another thing.

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm having a ton of fun with this team so far!

Zary and Pospisil; the feeling that we're in every game until the final buzzer; short-handed goals galore; Pelletier on the verge of return and Kylington sightings; and the excitement/nervousness for what the future is going to look like after the trade deadline.

Hoping to see Ras get on the board tonight and hopefully some powerplay success as well...we can't go the whole season this bad can we?

Go Flames!
