This would be such a great time for a 5 or 6 game oiler losing streak

Was wondering how this game take would read after what can only be described as an aberration of a game.
Interestingly enough the eye test told me the team was not as bad defensively as the 5 goals against suggested, and the fancy stats pretty much back that up.
Special teams are important to be above average if you want overall success in the NHL. But last night demonstrated that though ST can help a club, it cannot carry one. You need every facet of the game to be solid or you are nothing but a pretender.
Somnething that Friedman stated after the game last night was that
"hockey is better without defense or goaltending"
Yeah....no. Worst take I have ever heard from him.
That was a terrible hockey game other than the outcome.
Also....in a game like that back in the day when there were many of them with that kind of scoring, there would have been multiple fights/line brawls and coaches yelling at one another across the benches. Barely a scrum last night other than Mike Smith showing how far into their collective conscience Matthew Tkachuk resides.
Good stuff Bingo.

I'm not calling that a terrible game. Maybe the first period.
But seeing the home team dominate the opposition 5on5 was entertaining as hell IMO.

I imagine there will be a lot of things about this game that Darryl will be unhappy about but he's also a results oriented guy so I expect he slept pretty good last night.

Yeah i think he would be pissed about the penalties in the 1st, but beyond that not a whole lot.
He would never say it, nor would the players, but they looked tired in the 1st and didnt get their legs going til halfway through it.
Past that though the team was pretty good at both ends with a few brain cramps on the Flames side and full on strokes happening in the Oiler zone.

I think he was being facetious. He's no fool. It was a wild one and I think he was making fun of it.
But I agree that he -- and no-one else on the panel except Bieksa -- acknowledged that the game was fundamentally one sided (even Spector said it out loud). That's a definite fail.

Went to the dome and then watched the replay at home again. It is amazing to see how Oilers' D covered their D zone. You got Lindy, Tanev on partial breakaway and Gaudreau dancing around like a 3on3.
Crazy game at the least.
Good write-up.

No, that is his stance on it. He mentions it all the time on 32 thoughts and on the Marek show.
He is of the opinion that more goals makes games better, and to be fair he isn't alone in that belief.
Its such a flawed thought process though.

It’s why he wants more penalties called on players that touch McDavid. He’s not a full blown Oilers fan like MacLean but he wants the Oilers to have success and win a cup.

Going to games in person over the last few years has been a bit of a chose at times during the pandemic. The 50% capacity limits and the no "beverages" certainly put a damper on the games.
Last night seemed to be the end of all that. The Saddledome was buzzing like it was a playoff game.
I kinda hoped that the playoffs would rejuvenate that feeling. It seemed like it was very slowly creeping that way, but it busted through with a vengeance last night.
I think the days of having trouble sometimes even giving tickets away is over.

Which is odd because he is likely a life long Leafs fans, and I think his wife is from Calgary.

And not only that. He wants McDavid to not get called for penalties. Just ridiculous.

Huh. Well that's disappointing. I enjoy Elliotte, but that's dumbassery.

It's gotta be parroting something he's being fed. I can't believe any serious hockey fan would rather see basketball-style scoring than well played balanced hockey.
There's lots of narratives being pushed by people at the top, in the desperate hope of reaching new fans. And they obviously feel that people will be attracted to high scoring games. So that's the push. McDavid's a scorer so we anoint him as a superhero and tell people how great the spectacle is. It's sad. Cuz lots of really good players are getting buried in the snow here.
And the fastest growing game in terms of both fanship and new players in North America is of course, boring old low scoring soccer, so I'm not sure that the idea of "more goals = more good" is right in the first place. EDIT (I'm wrong the fastest growing game is pickle ball LOL but soccer's up there too).

I don't think Friedman is so much an Oilers booster as he is a huge fan of McDavid. If not for him he wouldn't give the Oilers the time of day. There have been numerous times in his radio spots and on 32-Thoughts that I have thought he must be a secret Flames fan.
