Dustin Wolf ranked as #5 goalie prospect
Dustin Wolf was listed as the 5th-best drafted goalie prospect in a ranking released today by Scott Wheeler of the Athletic, behind only Yaroslav Askarov (NSH 11th overall in 2020), Spencer Knight (FLA 13th overall in 2019), Jesper Wallstedt (MIN 20th overall in 2021) and Sebastian Cossa (DET 15th overall in 2021).
Quote:
Wolf has now wrapped up one of the best CHL runs we’ve seen from a goalie in recent memory. There was nothing left for him to prove there. The .935 save percentage across 149 games spanning four seasons in Everett speaks for itself. Now his journey becomes about proving people wrong at the pro level and showing that his size (5-foot-11) won’t be an impediment against better competition. I’m a big believer that it won’t. The strengths of Wolf’s game are his footwork and his tracking, which both get As. You’ll rarely see a player beat him side-to-side on a breakaway because he can stick on top of them and does such a good job anticipating their movements. On top of that, he’s also got refined technical ability and positioning which allow him to challenge shooters, block a lot of pucks with his hands (especially his glove hand, which is really strong), play within himself and stay center.
|
He has a long way to go, but with Wolf picked at #214 overall in 2019, if he continues this trajectory he has the potential to be easily the best-value Flames pick in the last 30 years.

Did I read somewhere that the criteria for goalies is different with Wheeler?
Age range up to 25?
How then does a goalie who was top 2 or 3 in the AHL in both save percentage and GAA for the last two seasons not make the top ten?

Not clear but could be this:
"Not currently established as one of their NHL club’s two primary options, with rare exceptions for goalies on the younger side."
So the fact that Vladar (who i assume is who you are talking about) is the assumed Flames' back-up might be it.
Or he may just not like him. Though he's not mentioned in a rather lengthy list of also-rans so I wonder if it's an criteria exclusion.

Very curious to see how he adjusts to pro hockey.
It’d be great to develop a goalie for a change

how awesome would it be for Wolf to become what we expect and for Parsons to get back on track? 1-2 punch, fingers crossed.

Good luck to him. Love his underdog story.
I expect he starts in Kansas City and tears up the ECHL, lighting a match under Parsons and Werner.

I was just going to say this! In the other thread that are criticizing his top 50 for not including Coronato but are here quick to point this out.
Perhaps the Flames didn't take the best player available with their first rounder this year.
Or Wolf isn't as good as he says he is.

Sorry, but I refuse to become excited about a Goaltending prospect with this organization. I hope to be proved wrong.
