The Calgary Flames announced today that they have signed forward Dillon Dube to a three-year contract with a $2,300,000 AAV.

Dube spent the last two seasons with the Calgary Flames and has 121 career NHL games with 18 goals and 25 assists for 43 points along with 30 penalty minutes. Drafted by Calgary in the second round (56th overall) in the 2016 Draft, the former Kelowna Rocket (WHL) has amassed 56 AHL games with the Stockton Heat were he netted 19 goals and 37 assists for 56 points and 34 penalty minutes. Dube captained the Canadian junior team that won gold at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship in Buffalo, NY.

I thought 3 years at around $2M made sense.

…but I also expected them to end up signing a 1 or 2 year deal, so this surprises me a bit.

Definitely don’t have any issues with it. I’m hopeful Dube can improve significantly on what he showed last season.

Term is perfect. Was hoping for a 1 handle on the AAV, but getting 3 years is great.

Probably expensive in year one, but likely a bargain in years two and three.

So probably a pretty fair deal

He's played at a 30 point pace over the last 2 seasons.

38 points in 96 games (0.40 PPG)

So from that perspective $2.3M makes sense and is below the $100K for every point threshold.

I do like the three year term as well, this could be really good value as soon as next year if he can evolve to become a 40-50 point forward. I thought the Flames would want to go really cheap on a 1 year deal, so like the strategy here to be on some upside.

Agree with all of this. The AAV is arguably a bit high for what he's shown to date, but I think this has potential to be a very solid contract, particularly in years 2 and 3. I think Dube has a lot more to show and am optimistic for the future.
