I do not know if this was posted already, so my apologies if it has.
"Five people died when a crane attached to a high-rise building under construction suddenly collapsed Monday morning while in the process of being dismantled."
There’s a video that presumably was filmed by the crane operator during dismantling (bad enough) clearly showing a total lack of standard safety. Just fn brutal all around man. Stay safe out there guys.

i've mentioned before that i have a fire/ehs (radio) scanner.
when the call went out for units to respond it was crazy. you could hear in the dispatcher's voice the magnitude of what was going on... it gave me that awful 'pit in my stomach' feeling.
when the initial units got on scene and started sending teams of fire fighters to help it was gut-wrenching. the platoon captain directing guys where to go - engine 1 respond to this location - we have people buried. engine 2 we need you at this location for more people buried... and so on.
the high angle rescue teams for both kelowna and west kelowna responded.
ambulances came in from all over... a number from as far away a vernon.
just listening in made me feel sick.
back in my 'youth' i worked in concrete forming & framing. anytime we were at a site with a crane and there was work to be done on the crane, everyone (with the exception of the crane guys) had the day off becuz it was too risky to have people around just in case something went wrong.
i had a band practice last night and of course this was something we talked about. the guy who runs the band - his daughter's boyfriend works in the building that got hit by the broken off piece of crane. two offices over from his office was the office that got destroyed and only this morning were crews able to recover the man's body.... again... just makes me feel sick.

Contained in AvE's video.

I'm so furious at this one. My grandmother's condo is right behind this and their patio deck was hit. Not to mention their condo is on the right hand side and on the second floor (their back door goes out onto this patio/parkade deck that was hit) and very well could have been them. They have NO idea when they can return home. They have had so many complaints about this construction of this building. My grandmother's husband is a former construction project manager who has managed projects around the world and he knows what he's talking about and he has had so many words about this project BEFORE this happened. And I also feel awful for the families of the 5 dead.
Looks like the operator was filming lifts for Instagram instead of doing his job balancing the crane. No one was wearing hard hats and some guys no harness while they were dismantling.

All it takes is one mistake by the operator or a worker and those things can come down surprisingly easy (or so Ive learned). Usually ends up being a few mistakes that compound each other (like unlocked pins, etc, in previous failures). AvE hit the nail on the head - its a management issue. Culture shouldn't be such that guys are operating without PPE, filming while operating, etc.
So sad for everyone involved, especially the innocent bystander.

When the very basic safety (PPE) is neglected, you know that the more difficult stuff is completely absent.
