By the way, the Penguins got Marino from the Oilers for a 6th last year...

because he wouldn't sign with the Oilers. Was going to do the drafted college player to UFA thing.

To be fair, the Canes got a better return on Adam Fox and I think Fox and Marino are pretty comparable players at the NHL level.

Now maybe, but Fox was a bigger name when their respective rights were traded and probably would have had more interest as an UFA than Marino would have.
And didn't you know, propagandist David Staples called Marino a marginal prospect when he wouldn't sign with the Oilers: https://edmontonjournal.com/sports/h...r-a-draft-pick

He has pretty much exactly the same contract status as Valimaki.
Marino has 56 NHL games and 4 playoff games and Valimaki has 24 and 2 games.
Should the Flames be trying to extend Valimaki for 6 years prior to this season?
What sort of contract could you sign Valimaki now compared to what he will get after being in the Calder mix?
Marino was in 8th spot in Calder voting at the end of last season.

this should serve as a glimmer of hope for every poor kid that gets drafted by Edmonton. Not all is lost!

There are 7 guys drafted in 2015 6th round that have NHL games
Magniapane 122
Appleton 82
Gavrikov 69
Marino 56
only 11 from the 2015 3rd round

I'm still not sure why Pittsburgh gave Edmonton anything for his rights. He was already 4 years past his draft, so he should have been able to sign with the Pens without condition.
The only thing I can think of is that because he didn't declare his intention to leave college prior to June 1, he would have had to wait 30 days from the day he declared his intention to become a UFA and either he or the Pens didn't want to wait the 30 days and potentially have the other side lose interest.
That would explain why the Pens paid a lot less than the Rangers did for Fox's rights. Carolina owned Fox's rights for another year and he could only sign elsewhere with a trade. With Marino, the Penguins were only buying an extra 30 days of exclusivity with the player.

I believe there was talk that he was considering going to go back to Harvard for another year to finish up his degree which would have extended his NHL rights another year

It is strange to me that the Pens didn’t get 7 or 8 years for that kind of commitment, especially with salaries being driven down this year. Lots of commitment for a guy with one (pretty solid) season, but if they believe in him that much why not all 8 years? Can’t see Marino wanting exceptionally more AAV.

And to you he is just one of the 6 Gio replacements that the Flames have in the pipeline?

Overall, I feel like locking up promising RFA defensemen to deals like this benefit the club more than the player. Sometimes you get a few swings and misses but I think it's a pretty safe gamble
