Wow, Ron Stern had 338 penalty minutes in his first full season in Calgary (72 games)? Man, the league has changed since then.

Tons of guys I liked that wore #22. For me, Conroy is the guy.

Yeah... jersey number 22 is the antithesis of jersey number 21.

So many great players here.

Marsh was short lived here but was a tremendous player.

Fotiu was a freaking beast. Bit if a psychopath on the ice at times.

Bullard just a great scorer. And an epic moustache.

Hunter a good player on the cup winning team.

Langkow who was severely underrated as a 200' player and one of my personal favorites.

Gotta be motormouth Craig though. Injected life into a moribund franchise and was a leader throughout his extensive time as a Flame.

Lots wore 22 but Craig Conroy would be my choice great guy was very sad to see him go to the Kings. I always wondered if he played for the Flames in 2006 playoffs what would have happened.

Ok this one not too hard for me, I have a Conroy 22 at home. Really I think it comes down to him and Langkow- if you were going to look at their careers or ask someone from the outside who had the better career- maybe Langkow? he was a hell of a player, I was excited from the time we acquired him and he was an important Flame


Conroy- of course who can forget the feelings (or Iggy's stories) about him arriving. but he stole the center job from the enigmatic Savard and wouldn't give it back. had a big year centering Iggy during his monster season, and of course 04. Yes he wore 2 numbers, but it won't help to punt the Conroy decision to 24 (the next few jersey discussions are going to be fascinating)....add in the gift of the gab the guy had and his role post playing here in Calgary and its a pretty easy choice


Marsh- steady
Kromm- another diceline member that won't get any traction
Fotiu- one of a kind
Stern- interesting player who also became part of the community

Bullard- part of the 87-88 Monster offence team
Mark Hunter- the '2nd bit' of the Bullard return was a former 40 goal himself relegated to 3rd line duty on the cup team
Stempniak- didn't he lead the team in scoring (sort of) one year?

I was thinking about this, too. #23 should come down to Paul Reinhart vs Sean Monahan. Gelinas will get some '04 nostalgia votes.
#24 and #25 shouldn't even be close. Then it gets interesting again at #26.

Marsh was a captain and a warrior; Bullard was the most skilled (and trading him brought us Gilmour); Fotiu neutralized the Oilers’ goons and helped make the ‘86 Cup run possible; Langkow was perhaps the best 2-way centre, but a similar case could be made for Conroy, and his leadership tips the scale. Voted Conroy.

Okay, this is really hard since Conroy and Langkow both wore this number, but Conroy wore 24 as well.

Conroy's better years were under 22 and he obviously means so much to this franchise off the ice in so many ways. Iginla benefitted so much from Conroy that it turned him into the MVP of the league.

However Langkow was a very, very good player for many years. Not flashy, but very efficient. Not the greatest offensive or defensive center ever, but very strong at both ends of the ice. Consistently good...that's how I would describe Langkow.


Other considerations:

Mike Bullard had 2 fantastic years in the 80s, but was part of neither big playoff run
Ron Stern had a long tenure with leadership, toughness, and some contributions in a bottom 6 role.
Lee Stempniak had a few solid years in a middle six role. Provided some good veteran leadership on a young rebuilding squad.

I was this close to voting for Randy Turnbull for playing one NHL game in his entire career, and that game was for the Flames.

I ended up going with Langkow under the assumption that Conroy will take 24 instead.

I remember Conroy for his time wearing #24, so I voted for Langkow for #22.

I would vote for Hudler over Conroy for 24. Connie was well past his prime by the time he came back.

This one was tough but I voted for Langkow. Stempniak is another underrated one.

I see that. I don't get it. Peplinski, imo, was one of the most important players to this franchise in its history.

Lots of fans weren't around then and most likely won't appreciate who Pepper was. Just like lots of fans don't see the importance of who Lanny was.

This is a tough one just because Conroy wore #24 longer than he wore #22, but he was much more productive wearing #22. On the other hand, Langkow wore #22 the entire time he was a Flame.

Their total performance for the Flames was very similar. Langkow had slightly better overall stats, but did so in the higher-scoring, post-lockout world.


I think I have to go with Conroy for the intangibles he brought and his role during the '04 run. It also frees up my #24 vote for Pepper.

I went Langkow. Conroy was part of that 04 club while Langkow was part of some disappointing playoff teams that followed directly after but I don't think anyone blames Langkow for them. Solid two-way player, decent offensively even if we were missing that number 1 center.

It's extremely close, but give me the player with multiple 30 goal seasons with the Flames.

Hudler is definitely going to give Conroy a run for the money in my books for #24.

It is tough for me to vote for the legends of yesteryears since I didn’t really watch them play much. Some are obvious for what the history books hold duh so MacInnis, Lanny, Loob, Fleury, Vernon, Roberts, Nieuwendyk etc. But many others like Suter, Peplinski etc, I’d lean towards the players I have watched.

Langkow has TWICE as many goals, as Conroy under #22 (123 vs 60). I love 2004 team as much, as the next guy, but Conroy had 8 goals in 63 GP that season. He sure was good in playoffs, but he wasn't really a monster like Iginla or Gelinas. To me, Langkow is the best #22 hands down, and it wouldn't be even a debate, if not for the 2004 run.

It's funny to think back to the outrage over the trade for Conroy at the time. At this point, is there a more widely adored Flames alum?
