Flames The Athletic: Flames firesale

Athletic article on Flames moves/rumblings from Russo, Duhatschek and LeBrun:

https://theathletic.com/4636948/2023...shared_article

Lindholm still going through his options

Primary suitors for Hanifin appear to be Buffalo and Florida.

Colorado needs a 2 way center like Backlund but can't fit him in if Calgary doesn't retain salary

Toffoli may be a fit in Carolina

At minimum Flames are expected to get a 2nd round pick for Vladar

If Vladar lands a 2nd, that’d be huge!

I’d be worried about Florida for a Hanifin return, although I’d be happy to get their 2026 1st round pick +. Buffalo holding 13th overall looks like a prime target for a return.

At the trade deadline there were some rumours regarding Backlund and Toffoli, and I think specifically there was something related to Toffoli and Carolina.

I imagine those eared both very different deals pending Linda's decision

Flames should absolutely retain on Backs especially if it helps pry a 1st from Colorado, honestly retain on them all. Something around a Hanifin + Vladar package to Buffalo seems to make sense to me too. Exciting times the next few days here for Flames fans, let the new era begin!

We should retain on Hanifin, Backlund and Toffoli trades to maximize the returns. Depending on what comes back from those trades if Lindy is willing to stay if he sees a positive direction keep him.

Most important takeaway is you have 2 teams interested in hanifin and you can have them bid each other up.

Teams have other targets in mind apart from our players so it’s positive to hear that we’ve got interest, and potentially a bidding war.

Everyone saying that we’ve got all summer to make moves is mistaken. Money will tighten up after the draft and free agency. Worst case scenario is we get left at the altar with a bunch of malcontents to start the season who have made it clear they don’t want to be here. Would be an awkward dressing room to start the season, let alone risk of injury to these players which could minimize any return at the trade deadlime. Next 7-10 days is important to set the table for next season.

All this chatter should mean teams are well aware that some of these good players are available. Maybe gives Connie some options to pick the best offers. And with multiple teams interested maybe there will be a sense of urgency to make a deal at the draft, to not miss out on the opportunity to add a Hanifin, Lindholm or Backlund.

Bring on the change!

The more I think about it, given Florida's centre depth, if they aren't willing to give up Lundell for Hanifin, I would just tell them to pound sand.

Like I said before if the return doesn't begin with Lundell, hang up the phone and return Buffalo's call.

Brindamour apparently loves Elias. So there could be a fit with the Canes too.

If we are dealing with the canes I’d want Kotkaniemi to be a center piece. Toffoli 50 Percent retained + Lindholm + Vladar for Kotkaniemi + 30th OA + Drury + Rights to Pool party + Philly’s 3rd round pick

How close is that ? Which team would need to add?

Some good young pieces coming back and if the flames could figure out Jesse in any way this could be like a Lindy/Hanifin 2.0 trade with the added bonus of Drury and 30 OA.

Agreed. I think it’s almost a certainty he would sign an extension in Florida so my trade with them assumes and extended Hanifin. Therefore Lundell is the centrepiece.

The previous rumour of the flames targeting duclair makes me think he would be included in the trade which is fine - as long as it’s as a cap dump. If florida is treating him as a major piece in the trade and is trying to make that diminish the return of the young player/picks then move on.

My hope is that Buffalo wins out. I would love to grab that 13th overall pick. I imagine the tough part with Buffalo is that they are likely to be in on Pesce as well. Harder to push them to up their bid if they have other options to target on defence. I doubt either Carolina and Florida would be eager to be trade partners so Florida is not likely in on Pesce.

I don't think the Canes would trade Kotkaniemi gvien all they've invested in him. And frankly I wouldn't want him. I don't see the upside.

This gets tricky, since Hanifin cannot technically sign a contract until 1 July. In today's market, I cannot see a team making a deal that "assumes" an extension—there is just too much risk that it does not happen. A team acquiring Hanifin will be trading for the player in the final year of his current contract, and with the hope they can extend him. But, there is no way to make this a condition of a trade leading up to the draft.

22 YO 6’2 200 lb center who just put up a season not unlike Lindy’s final season in Carolina before we snagged him who also signed to a team friendly contract the next 6 seasons? We need young centers and I can’t think of a better buy low candidate than Jesperi but I agree that the Canes might be hard pressed to give him up.

There are reports that Carolina are making progress on a deal with Pesce. Which is good for the Flames, because Pesce at RD is a better fit for BUF than Hanifin at LD.

The biggest roadblock for Florida is cap. If Duclair isn’t part of the Hanifin deal, they need to move him (or Reinhart) somewhere else to free up cap. Which complicates things.

Kotkaniemi is a borderline cap dump. He’s a worse Sam Bennett when he was traded from here. Not interested in Drury either, draft+5 and he’s still barely an impact player in the AHL. Waiver fodder.

While it could be an excellent buy low situation with Kotkaniemi, I wouldn’t gamble the Flames best trade chip on it. Lindholm needs to fetch a premium, top tier piece, and there’s not one in this trade.

I think they would move him. The signing was purely out of spite to get back at Montreal for offer sheeting aho.

Was a poor pick at the time. Still young. Could still pop. But a lot of maybes and ifs, so not a primary target in any return (unless you absolutely need a C back).
