Default 2018 WJC Day 6: SUI-CZE, USA-FIN, SVK-DEN, RUS-SWE

Final day of the preliminary round. Quarterfinals and the relegation round start on January 2nd. Canada and Belarus have the day off as they have already finished their respective four preliminary round games yesterday.

Yesterday Canada clinched 1st place in Group A and will face 4th place in Group B in the QFs. Belarus also clinched a spot in the best of 3 relegation round.

All the games today have quarterfinal implications.

Flames prospect stats
Dube 4gp 1g 1a 2pts +1 - tied 5th for SOG with 13
Fox 3gp 0g 1a 1pts +2
Lindstrom 3gp 0g 0a 0pts +1 - 3rd in faceoff % 67.74$
Valimaki 3gp 1g 2a 3pts +2 - tied for 6th in scoring by defencemen
Tuulola 1gp 0g 0a 0pts +1
Ruzicka 3gp 0g 1a 1pts even

10 AM MT Switzerland vs Czechia
Both teams are going to the QFs, just a question of who they are going to face. A win here makes it less likely it will be Canada.

2 PM MT USA vs Finland
Battle for 2nd place in Group A. The loser of this game is going to face 2nd place in Group B in the QFs.

Should be an exciting game with 2 medal favourites going at it.

Fox will wear #8 for USA
Valimaki will wear #6 for Finland
Tuulola will wear #19 for Finland

4pm MT Slovakia vs Denmark
The loser of this game will be group As representative in the relegation round. Winner will go on to the QFs.

Slovakia's game yesterday was Ruzicka's best of the tournament. He has been slowly improving as the tournament has progressed.

Ruzicka will wear #21 for Slovakia

6 pm MT Russia vs Sweden
Another exciting game. Sweden is undefeated so far in this tournament and Russia might have the skill to change that.

Lindstrom was taken off Nylander and Pettersson's line part way through last game. Have to think that will still be the case going into this game as both Nylander and Pettersson put up points with Andersson 5 on 5.

Lindstrom will wear #16 for Sweden

Cze games are fun, it's 3-3 and Czechs change the goalie.

Czechs beat Switzerland 6-3 which cements Switzerland in 4th for Group B and a date with Canada on January 2 for the QFs.

The Fins appear to be using a PP setup similar to the Flames (a one point-man umbrella), but just displayed the key that Calgary is sadly lacking: Tolvanen (playing on the right half-boards) hammering a one-timer past the goalie. With Gaudreau and (recently) Backlund on the half-boards, there's very little threat from scoring from far out, and penalty killers can just clog up the middle of the ice.

USA wins in regulation, giving them 2nd in the pool and the Finns 3rd. That means the Finns stay on Canada's side of the bracket, facing the 2nd place finisher in pool B in the quarters, with the winner of that game playing Canada in the semis. USA crosses over playing the 3rd place finisher in pool B, with the winner of that game facing the first place finisher in pool B (presumably) in the semis.

Fox picked a good time to score his first goal of the season (all of his points at Harvard are assists).

It will be interesting to see if he gets named to the Olympic team tomorrow.
