Default Orthodontics - Kids

We just had a visit with our Orthodontist and my kid needs braces. Most of it will be covered but a fair chunk is out or our pocket. The treatment is $8400 for 3 years and includes having to wear a "Herbst" appliance. I'm just curious if this seems to be the normal cost for Ortho? A few families mentioned this cost seems a little high. I'm not looking for recommendations, just input on the cost.

Seems pretty reasonable to me, about the going rate.

I would think that's more then fair.

I wore braces for 4 years and 15 years ago it cost my parents something like $6000. Not including the appliances, retainers and other metal stuff they had wired into it.

Also, stock up on those little wax packets when your child has that Herbst appliance. That will rip holes out of the sides of your mouth and bleed and be sore like you can't imagine. The only relief was packing the ends of those with that wax so it wouldn't rub as much.

BUMP!

Surprised to see not a lot of info on orthodontists here. We just came out of a bad experience and need a new orthodontist, any recommendations?

Smile Zone near Southland and Macleod was good for our son. I liked that they took their time explaining everything to us and the front office staff was very efficient with billing and payment plan stuff.

I went to Lorne Kamelchuk for my braces. Good doctor, always saw me when I had emergency requirements. Nice office.

Our kids are going to Antosz Vincelli near Market Mall

He has a fun office, lots of superhero and Star Wars stuff around, a couple of arcade games in the waiting area.

Not sure if it’s cheap or not, our dentist referred us and we didn’t shop around

They also are pretty thorough and have been good explaining everything they do

I am a 100 years old lol. I went to antosz way back then . Teeth are still pretty straight. Video games and stuff. Sister went there too. Good business model must do well! Solid investment my dad and late grandma didn't have that opportunity. I am lucky

I had braces as a kid and I had a horrific experience because my family dentist fancied himself an amateur orthodontist and it was an unmitigated nightmare.

My parents finally moved me to Dr. Duncan Brown, which is the Smilezone on MacLeod and Southport.

He was 100% awesome. My braces went from being a disaster to 'no trouble at all.'

But it seems he sold it and moved to Canmore.

The orthodontist rarely saw the kids (just techs), appliances broke and they said it was "fine", attempted wrong treatment on one of the kids. Just completely disorganized. Dentist raised concerns about ineffective outcome. Poor front office, pretty much all around bad.

I had Duncs too. I loved him, thought he was great. My dad, however, wasn't the biggest fan since I wore my braces for 5 years and he kept telling my dad repeatedly for years they were coming off soon, only to continuously delay them getting removed. All my siblings went to him too and I have no doubt my family might as well own a piece of their retirement pie.

Dr Darryl Kemp did my childhood ortho about twenty years ago and I still get compliments on my teeth even though I stopped wearing my retainer like, in 2006 (don't tell Dr Kemp on me!). I remember his staff always ensuring a pleasant experience.

Are there any other recommendations for ortho with offices betweeen John Jaurie / 17th Ave SW and Shaganappi / Center Street? All 3 of the recommendations / referrals I have are further out, notably in the Country Hills vicinity.

Antoz is on my list to look into. Location is going to be a key given monthly visits.
