Default The 'Room for Improvement' Thread

I thought we could have a dedicated thread to discuss areas that the Flames could improve upon instead of bringing down optimism in the PGT's.

Starting with the game last night against New Jersey, theFlames still need to improve on their defensive zone giveaways. This has been an issue from game 1 and last night, it once again resulted in some grade A scoring chances that had to be bailed out by Smith.

Hopefully by game 20 they have sorted out this issue as the frequency is a bit alarming.

I applaud your effort, foolish person.

Room for improvement: 3rd line more than zero goals?

They need to hit the net more, and I also find that the puck seems to bounce around ALOT in games at the Saddledome. I am not sure how to counter that.

It would be nice if Dougie would start hitting the net.

Room for improvement.....

the following players have combined for a grand total of 9 points (2 goals and 7 assists) in 107 games played.

Stone (has 1 of the goal)
Hamonic (has the other 1 goal)
Brouwer
Lazar
Kulak
Hamilton
Bennett
Stajan
Batkowski
Glass
Jankowski

Now the point isn't that all these guys should be putting up huge offensive numbers but holy crap guys.... someone put the damn puck in the net. If you run the numbers without Stone and Hamonic its even worse.

80 games played
0 goals
5 assists

Its downright embarrassing.

I feel that we give up our blue line far too easily. Combined with not being great at board battles, teams are being allowed to cycle for extended periods of time and getting great looks from the point. Luckily Smith has shown almost Kipper like strength in seeing pucks through the crowd.

Dropping all D and the count is 0 goals, 4 assists from forwards in 65 games played.
Fortunate to be 8-6

No. If anything, the want for secondary scoring is precisely why the Flames are 8-6 and not 10-4.

I am tired of seeing comments about how lucky or undeserving the Flames are of their current record. Certainly, there are issues that need to be worked out, but the team has played some really good hockey in most games this season, and they deserve full credit for being in the playoff mix in Week #5. People need to stop apologizing for the good things the Flames are doing.

I especially think their last 4 games have been just fine, given the level of competition.

I view these differently. "It's nice that they're 8-6 considering their best hockey is yet to come."

I don't think the Flames are lucky to be where they are, I just believe that they can play even better when things are clicking. Therefore I'm thankful that they've managed to play 8-6 hockey despite not looking their best.

I think GG needs to give the JBL line 3rd line ice time instead of 4th line time. The last couple of games, they’ve looked stronger than the Stajan Brouwer Versteeg line.

We are 14 games in and the #Flames have still only scored one (!) goal in which none of Gaudreau, Monahan or 3M line was in on the scoring.

Nah. Fortunate to be above .500, given the above.
I think it's difficult to legitimately argue otherwise, or at least unusual to see any team above 500 without more balance.

I thought the gap control the last few games has been substantially better. It really is the defensive turnovers that have resulted in the high danger scoring chances for the most part.

“Unusual,” yes. “Fortunate,” not really since the Flames are absolutely winning the games they should be winning most of the time. By that, I mean that they are most often the best team on the ice, and not getting buried by their opposition in scoring chances.

Elite goaltending has been directly responsible for some of those wins.
