Default New research: CTE can be diagnosed in living patients

Expect diagnoses in a years time. This breakthrough came out a couple days ago.

...the NHL has hired Dr. Rudy Castellani, a neuropathologist and director of the Western Michigan University Center for Neuropathology.

Dr. Castellani denies that CTE exists and has challenged the work of Dr. Bennett Omalu, who made international headlines after he performed an autopsy in 2002 on former Pittsburgh Steelers player Mike Webster and diagnosed him with CTE

Great news. I would love to be able to be checked.

OT: Does TSN redirect to evernote like 80% of the time for anyone else?

Lol, bettman hired a cte denier doctor? So greasy. Is that out of the NFL playbook? The thing that the league will do to make or protect their money is actually despicable in some cases

This is excellent news. Anything that could help diagnose CTE before it's progressed too far is not only essential for the health of these players, but it's actually good for the NHL so they can mitigate the risk that players have with chronic concussion and avoid lawsuits. They don't want to look like the NFL on this issue, but it looks like they're going down that road with the denier. Pretty disgusting so far.

BU researchers examined the brains of 23 former college and pro football players and compared them to the brains of 50 non-athletes with Alzheimer ’s disease and 18 non-athletes.
Only so much can be taken from one line out of a TSN article, and I will find time to read the journal article, but if this is what they did, without additional controls, I see why the NFL or NHL would refute it
