Default [Article] T.J. Brodie’s fiancée is putting MS on ice

Article by Lisa MacGregor.

Quote:
When it comes to hockey, the Calgary Flames’ T.J. Brodie knows the battle he faces every time he steps on the ice.

But now, the defenceman and his fiancée are taking on a different kind of fight, off the ice.

Brodie’s fiancée, Amber De Bakker, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) last October.

It came as a shock for the couple, who grew up together in Ontario.

“I didn’t know how to react,” Brodie said. “I didn’t know exactly what it was or how it affects you or how quick it happens.”
It had been mentioned off-hand in some threads on here before, but the article is worth a read.

They're putting on an event at Flames Central on Saturday, December 17th. Tickets are available here.

Damn, had no idea. Think it might explain his on ice troubles.

Hopefully there is a breakthrough in MS research and her and others suffering can live a normal life again.

It was known but not generally talked about here. For sure it's a possible reason for his play.

TJ is being a completely stand up guy in the face of a pretty daunting and destructive disease. Here's hoping for the best for this couple.

I have no doubt that his focus has been all over the place this year and explains his inconsistencies.

That's awful, I didn't know about that. I know I wouldn't be able to perform my best if I had something like that weighing on me. I wish them the best.

Surprised some of you just found out now. That is why Im giving Brodie a pass for the whole season. This can affect people in many different ways, I hope they find a cure soon!

I am not sure why you would be surprised. Doesn't look to be widely reported prior to today. Certainly the first I heard of it.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

First I've heard of it as well.

Crappy news. At least the disease is more manageable now.

It's not, really. It's unpredictable, and by in large, unmanageable. There are various experimental procedures, none of which consistently deliver results.

MS research has an extremely long way to go.

This is very true, my brother-in-law has it and even with taking his meds regularly all it takes is one bad day and its back to square one.

A very debilitating disease that causes terrible pain for the sufferer and puts extreme stress on their marriage.
