Ahead of the Oilers? No, not when the Oilers have McDavid, but after that it’s close, with the Flames ahead on the blueline, the Oilers ahead at forward.
Agreed. McDavid is basically the alpha. He is the hockey-god reincarnated. He will deliver the cup to Rogers Place. So shall it be written.

McJesus may be the savior.. but GODreau is the creator.

Oilers Fans just have to deal with it.

This is Oilers 3rd rebuild in 8 years. By their 7th rebuild they might figure it out. Playoffs 2024.

Shouldn't the Oilers be out of the bottom 3rd of the league at least once in a decade before even claiming their rebuild is close to done?

Yawn. More drivel. Playing the game on paper instead of the ice. As usual December will tell is who's ahead of whom.

10 consecutive years out of the playoffs, primed to set an NHL record at 11.

Well according to the poll on the Edmonton Journal the Flames rebuild IS indeed ahead of the Oilers.

with respect to depth (bottom 6)...

Quote:
The Oilers have taken strides to shore up their third-line depth with the acquisition of players like Patrick Maroon, Kris Versteeg and Zack Kassian. The Flames? They lost centre Joe Colborne, who was fourth in scoring for Flames forwards with 44 points in 73 games. Michael Frolik is a good player and Troy Brouwer, 31, provides some veteran depth. Then there’s Matt Stajan, Michael Ferland, Lance Bouma, Linden Vey and Alex Chiasson (a depth signing I like). The third-line could be a weak link here
the author prefers:

Maroon, Versteeg and Kassian to...

Frolik, Brouwer, Stajan, Ferland, and Bouma

but Chiasson is a signing he likes.

lol

Staples is an idiot. But he gets the clicks so he probably isn't going anywhere unfortunately.

Not yesterday, but today and the day before yesterday, it is fair game.

Yes Calgary is ahead. Better defense, goaltending, with slightly less skilled forwards. Defense and goaltending win championships. Teams that can score and not do much else tend to be first round flops. Until they get 4 guys on the blueline that are close approximations in overall talent to Larsson, they will struggle. They currently have 1, maybe two if Klefbom progresses more.

They should be closer to a playoff team this year (Edmonton) than in years past. If you take off the month of October from the Flames schedule last year and give them double the points, which would have been a more normal point percentage (14 vs 7 in 12 games), they would have been right in the thick of the playoff race and that was with everything else being screwed up and not going right last year and selling off the UFA's.

Calgary should be a playoff team this year and are closer to being a contender.
