Default New York City Bombing

I didn't see this here and thought I would create a post

A explosion ripped through Chelsea and injured 29 people due to mostly shrapnel wounds. A second device was also found.

What is known

Nothing sensational. Just solid fact-based journalism, presented in a way that's easy for everyone to understand.

The NYTimes in general is pretty awesome. Even if you don't live in NY or the US, it's a worthy (digital) subscription.

They've named a suspect and put his photo out there. A 28 year-old naturalized American citizen originally from Afghanistan.

After a shootout, looks like they got him. And hey, according to the photo in the attached article, looks like they got him in the arm! Someone on the forum will be pleased

That's great if they got him alive and can pry information from him in the event that he wasn't working alone.

Guy is in custody. Apparently the cellphone inside the un-exploded device the police found was was in his name. 'Stupid criminal' hardly describes this idiot.

Two of the bombs had similar designs to ones that Al-Queda has published online.

He may not have been planning to live anyway.

Yes, I think Islamist terrorist is probably a more suitable moniker than criminal at this point.

So the best weapon against terrorists? Petty thieves

Quote:
In two separate cases, thieves snatching bags from city streets and train stations inadvertently helped law enforcement get the upper hand in an ongoing bomb spree that's hurt dozens of people and spans both sides of the Hudson River, sources said.

The day Ahmad Khan Rahami allegedly planted two bombs in Chelsea — one of which detonated on West 23rd Street — two thieves accidentally helped to disable his second pressure cooker bomb left inside a rolling suitcase on West 27th Street, sources said.

The young men, who sources described as being well-dressed, opened the bag and took the bomb out, sources said, before placing the explosive into a garbage bag and walking away with the rolling suitcase.

In doing so, investigators believe they inadvertently disabled the explosive, sources said. That allowed investigators to examine the cellphone attached to the bomb intact and discover that it was connected to the family of Rahami.

From there, they were able to identify pictures on social media of Rahami's family and of him, and they matched one of his photos to surveillance footage captured in Manhattan.

They also found a website where Rahami allegedly posted jihadist missives, sources said.

Of course when he's a total drunk loser, it's always gonna be easier to catch him.

Guy needs to watch more TV. Everyone knows about "burner" phones. That's basic knowledge from the first season of the Wire.
