Default Flames Top-10 individual seasons: Number 6 - Joe Mullen

http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=883342

I remember being really upset that he ended up in Pittsburgh because I didn't like the Pens as a kid. My Penguin-loving friend was mad too, saying he wasn't even worth a second rounder. His attitude changed pretty quickly.

Proof that you don't have to be soft to win the Lady Byng.

The day they made the trade, getting Mullen for Beers, Bourgeois and Cavallini, they went from being a middle of the road team that couldn't beat Edmnton to a contender that could beat Edmonton.

Always thought it was cool that he and his brother Brian honed their craft on the roller-hockey asphalt with chain-link fence surrounding it, of Hells Kitchen, New York.

And we got him for a song. And I was a big Eddy Beers fan. AND he was undrafted!

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

Fletcher made some trades that absolutely transformed the franchise. This trade may have been the biggest next to Lanny. The Flames needed a sniper and Mullen delivered.

My favorite player as a kid. Just tough as nails and willing to battle through incredible punishment for a goal. When I think of him getting traded for a 2nd rounder that still stings.

And he was moved to the Penguins because Tomas Forslund was going to step in and replace his scoring.

Mullen was the most natural and smoothest skating player on the team, with loads of scoring potential. I believe his trade was the beginning of the end for the Flames, as a contender.

Mullen was unusual in that he was a small player who scored most of his goals from the tough areas of the ice. He would have been a good fit in today's game.

Besides getting Joe Nieuwendyk and Kipper, this is probably the best Flames trade ever. But then losing him for nothing was a huge loss. The good and dark times of the Flames.

the things I appreciated about Joe was how tough he was.

Hed get leveled in the tough areas and get up every time ....I used to joke he had a little indian rubber ball in his bones.

Near the end of him playing here he wore one of the neck collars you see football players wearing because he got cross checked so much.

Dude had so much vision and a knack for gritty rebound goals.

I heard he was dead silent but when he was on look out. Could play with anyone. easy to coach ....played everywhere and I tell ya I see allot of Joey Mullen in Johnny .

was a shame when we lost him ....He and Loob were my absolute faves to watch.

I see Joe Mullen in Johnny as well.

Not so much in the flash that Johnny has - and I think that Joe was a better sniper than Johnny, but where they are the same is that they are both smaller guys who were not afraid of traffic and opponents weren't able to get under their skin. The determination perhaps.

I just realized that Joe Mullen is a Boston College graduate as well. Interesting. Joe was there 1975-1979. Johnny as we know 2011-2014

I think Johnny will be a Lady Byng winner soon as well.
