Default Flames Long Term Pieces

Gaudreau-Bennett?-Ferland?
????-Monahan-Frolik?
Bouma-Backlund/Granlund-Colborne?

Brodie-Hamilton
Giordano-????

Lot's of contenders for the empty D spot as some of our top prospects are at that position. Kylington, Hickey, Andersson are possible top d-men. I'm not really sure I classify Russell as a top 4 d-man, it'll be interesting to see if we sign him long term. Unfortunately our top 4 defense makeup lacks a big, strong, mean and physical d-man and none of our top prospects fit that bill either. It's an organizational need.

Goal is a position of need. Do we re-sign Ramo? Gillies may be our bet long term but he isn't ready yet. Ortio's future is unclear. McDonald would be years away as well.

Seems like we're in dire need of a couple top 6 wingers. Right shots would be preferred but we aren't too picky. This year's draft could be a solution for one of those two. Poirier and Klimchuk are still question marks.

If the Hawks can lose Byfuglien, Ladd, Sharp, Campbell, Oduya, Leddy, Niemi, Frolik, Saad in a 5 year span, we're in no place to guess what our roster looks like in 5 years. But if they're not too active in the market, I don't mind something like:

Ferland-Monahan-Gaudreau
Bennett-Jankowski-Toffoli
Bouma-Backlund-Klimchuk
Mangiapane-Arnold-Hathaway

Brodie-Hamilton
Giordano-Kylington
Ollas-Mattsson-Andersson

Honestly, I don't see it. Kanzig looks like he'll be Breen 2.0.

I don't even think Bennett + 1st will get Toffoli out of LA.

RFA in 2017. On pace for 40 goals. Friends with Monahan. Kings looking to re-sign Kopitar and Lucic.

If Kings re-sign Lucic
they've effectively given up on re-signing Toffoli who will command the kind of money only a team with a ton of cap space can afford. Kings, who are in perpetual cap hell, can't afford that.

2017 Flames have a ton of cap space. Rather than lose him to offer sheet we give the the Kings something like Poirier+Frolik+Hickey. A heavy price to pay but it's Tyler Toffoli here.

Not saying Flames should do it, I just don't think the Kings would do it. Their window to win is now, and Toffoli is at a perfect age, and trending to score almost 40 goals this year. Why would they trade him to take a player that's a couple years earlier in development.

Unless Toffoli is demanding a trade, I just don't see LA trading him anytime soon.

Are they trying to re-sign Lucic? Man would he look good in a Flames uniform. Lucic on one line and Ferly on another.

id love toffoli but if he were to be traded no way would it be in division or even conference, and i think theres only around 7 current roster players who are pegged in for sure in our lineup for the coming years and thats monohan gaudreu bennet frolik giordano brodie and hamilton

I can't see LA not signing Toffoli unless his demands are crazy. Outside of Doughty, I can't think of another player that is more important to the long-term success of the Kings - Kopitar included. He is putting up elite numbers at a young age.

LA will just find a way to circumvent the cap like they've already done a few times to keep Toffoli, and it'll take too much to pry him out of there.

Backlund and Wideman are the only Flames players born between Feb. 19 and Mar. 20 making them the only Pisces on the team. Depends what you mean by long term though, Backlund has been with the organization longer but Wideman is older. I will need some clarification.

EDIT: May have misread the thread title

Long term pieces?

C:
Jankowski
Bennett
Monahan
Arnold

LW:
Gaudreau
Manigapane
Ferland
Granlund?
RW:
...
...
...
Poirier?

D:
Andersson
Brodie
Hamilton
Kylington
Hickey
Rafikov
AOM
Culkin

Goalie:
Gillies
...? I don't know if Ortio or McDonald or the other one we nabbed will pan out, but with goalies you never ever know. You just know the random prospect camp invitee who was never drafted could very well be the goalie of the future. No pressure Nick Schneider .

I see a few long term developmental pieces but in three years the bulk of the roster should...SHOULD carry most of these players barring trades. Of the main roster I think everyone else fair game. And I didn't name some of the prospects I don't think much of at this very minute. Doesn't mean anything other than they aren't long term pieces.

Over all I think the Flames are really set at the Center position for the long term. There is some good depth there. Deperately need some RW depth aside from the old giant bottom six muckers though. Need some scoring prowess at the spot. Which is half why the two giant Finns make kind of okay with the Flames not making the playoffs.

EDIT: Kind of skipped signed vets: Don't need Backlund or Stajan after this year IMO. You can shelter Janko and Arnold IMO is ready. Or keep one and get Jamko some AHL seasoning if he needs it out of camp.

RW? Who's left? Frolik is the only RW after this year, position needs a complete overhaul around Frolik. Be it through lucking out in the draft or via trade.. something HAS to happen.

LW: meh. Bouma's a keeper. I think thats about it.

D: Nakladal is a dark horse for me to stay. He should.

Goalies: Lose them all. All this re-sign Ramo talk makes me ill and Hiller isn't a Flame after they year is out or even sooner.

No. And without hyperbole, he's not top 4 on the Heat either. Maybe not even top 6

The ones that should remain Flames for at least a few years

Gaudreau-Monahan-....
....-Bennett-....
....-Jankowski-Frolik
Bouma-....-....

Giordano-Brodie
....-Hamilton
....-....

....
....

There are players that I am hopeful that will emerge, Kylington being #1 on my list. After that, everything is a toss up. Some players will be fine as a filler guy for the time being. The Flames need players to fill the rest of the spots either in the organization or through trade/UFA.
