Interesting. As power as Google has become and is becoming, I doubt anything will ever take over AIM in the popularity department, but I am going to try this out myself to see what it's like for the hell of it.

pfft, only like half the world!

I use Ichat, which is also AIM compatible, and pretty much most of my friends use the same as well. I tend to use chat more often that my cell phone these days. ha

No one uses AIM. Everyone is using MSN.
Do you think that people will switch to Google Talk?

			Just start using GAIM....
Can talk on MSN, AIM, Yahoo, etc, and appears to be Google Chat compatible too.

I don't know anyone that uses AIM anymore. MSN has definitely taken over. AIM has been going down like ICQ and MIRC.

going to be tough for Google to succeed with this one i think. it's hard to have even half your contact list in your current IM program to want to convert to Google unless it has some groundbreaking features, which i highly doubt according to the screens in on the website.

MSN is huge and is showing no signs of slowing down. I use it as well as all my friends (all two of them). I am a substitute teacher and I can tell you that ALL the junior high and High School kids are using MSN and nothing else.
 ICQ is all but dead.

interesting tidbit... download.com(cnet.com) released a top 10 list of the most popular downloads of the last 10 years last week and ICQ was their top download of all time..
I'm gonna give google talk a try when I get home, if it follows along the line of its search engine and Gmail its gonna be an awesome program.

There is also gAIM which free and contains all chat applications at once; its the one I use. Google also used a pre-existing protocal for their messenger (Jumble), which gAIM supports. I was able to use Google Talk with gAIM without having to install anything. I'm chatting with msn and Google Talk buddies in the same window right now.

The main advantge of using the actual Google Talk client is that you can use their voice chat feature, which isn't supported on gAIM or any other client.

I also use Gaim if I only need text communication - it's very handy, and it's free.

The protocol is Jabber isn't it?

I believe that voice chat is also available in MSN as well as Yahoo! (although Yahoo is way better than MSN's offering). I'm excited to see if the Google version works well or not.

Yes, MSN voice chat is available, but it rarely works (at least for me) and the quality is horrible. I'm also interested to see how good the quality of Google's voice chat is.

 Exactly what I was thinking.

Who the hell uses AIM?

Hasn't AOL been on life support for the last five years?

People here use MSN.

They key is, google talk (the chatting portion of it) is built on jabber, which has the ability to intereact with all of the other networks (currently googles jabber client does not however)So perhaps google will open there client up to the other networks..
my mom has heard of google, she hasn't heard of trillian..
