Not a clue. I do travel for work and stay in hotels, have had nieces and nephews come over etc. Really not sure about the origin.

mineral water on your bed legs and sticking any hiding spots cloths, sheets, etc into the dryer at maximum heat to desiccate the effers. If it was winter you could also put your mattress outside to achieve the same result.

My brother and his wife just discovered bed bugs in their home, they were bringing home newborns and so they did not want to apply any chemical treatments, which led to this:
http://wekillbedbugs.ca/extherminate-safe-heat-kit/
Chemical-free treatment with heat. They haven't had an issue since (it has been 2 months) and the company they used offer a guarantee where they will return free of charge up to two times should they be unsuccessful.
I believe the company above is the one they went with, but there are others if you want to do your research.

You will either simply notice them crawling around the corners of your bed sheets (especially if you lift them up and check the seams), or you will start to notice that you have bites (they appear as red dots).
You can throw out all your stuff, but they may also reside in your kick boards and other cracks in the flooring or walls. The likelihood of success by ridding yourself of all clothing, bedding, mattresses and furniture is not significant enough to warrant it as a solution. Besides, it'll probably cost you way more to refurnish and replace your wardrobe.

I had them in a place I lived in Edmonton a few years ago. Heat treatment is the preferred method these days and you have to pack up and do some prep work before the company will come in. You'll probably be displaced for at least a day.
If you wanted to try to deal with it yourself, it's quite a bit easier if you have mostly hard surfaces everywhere. If you have carpet, you pretty much need professional help. Regarding the bed itself though, you need to thoroughly vacuum everything (including inside the box spring if you have one). You can also spray the whole lot with isopropyl alcohol with apparently kills their eggs. I'd recommend just going with the professional treatment from the get go however.

I had bed bugs in a hotel in Missouri a few years back...
Quickest time I ever left a hotel at 3 in the morning...
Now every time I check in to a room I strip the bed and check...
Every time.

You spelled "kill it with fire" wrong.
Not a chance would I be keeping the bed after that. A friend of mine had them and ended up replacing half his furniture.
As far as natural remedies go, isn't the big part of why there's such a recent spread of them is the chemicals that were used were banned, and more natural/organic/weaker chemical methods had to be used? Read up on it quite a bit before I went to New York, and that seemed to be the general consensus. I'd be leery of trying to tackle it myself with drug store remedies personally.

Good habit to get into. Something I've started doing a few years back.

Bed bugs bite you 3 times so you will see 3 equally spaced bites.
I got bitten in a hotel in LA. I check every hotel now. The good thing is they are really easy to kill. Leaving your suitcase in a hot or cold car for a few hours when you get back kills them.
