Icon48 NBC Sports chairman wants NHL players to cut their beards

According to the Tribune, Lazarus said he's talked with NHL officials, the NHL Players Association and even players in individual discussions to request shaves. They didn't want any part of his ridiculous request.

Yeah, you couldnt ask that in most normal occupations, what made him think he was going to get away with that here?

From a marketing perspective, he's absolutely right. Jonathan Toews is one of the sport's biggest stars, the playoffs should be prime time for promoting him and making his face familiar to casual fans. But he looks like an absolute tool because of his patchy, dumb beard.

Yup. But it is also why smart people don't let anyone in marketing make any real decisions.

Actually, you can most certainly ask it of people who make their money as faces on television. A lot of TV actors, newscasters, etc. have appearance standards written into their contracts. The dudes on Big Bang Theory can't just decide to grow beards.

So the question is how much the product of sports is like other television programming, where the people and their appearance are part of the product. I doubt he has a legal case, but it's a legitimate marketing concern.

And then the more fluent fans can explain to them the long, and pervasive into all levels of hockey, tradition of the playoff beard.

They should be playing it up as something unique and interesting vs a media deterrent because the boys don't look as handsome as normal.

Guaranteed a guy like Brent Burns gets more new fans because of his cavemanness than he loses because of it.

Probably. But I wouldn't be surprised if appearance clauses make their way into endorsement contracts. X dollars if you look however you choose, 1.5X if you shave off your beard in the playoffs so casual fans can actually recognize you and you don't look like a hipster backpacking through the Balkans.

It really hurt the Red Sox team that grew beards all year during the world series run/championship.

It made them MORE marketable.

My dad says the same thing, but he's in his 70s, and he still hasn't gotten over those dirty hippies.
