Default Is this a cockroach?

Or does it just look like one

My wife was unpacking some things that we packed up while redoing our kitchen. She threw the box out on the step when empty and went out a while later to throw it out or whatever and noticed this on it. Naturally she freaked out, texts me at work all flipping out over this. I dunno, it looks like one, but I've seen cockroaches in Calgary before, and they were pretty small. This one was half her finger long she said. Like Mexico roach big! Seen roaches in Mexico, and yeah, this kinda looks like one. So I dunno where it came from, but hopefully from outside and not in. We were using produce boxes from Safeway too, so I spose there's a possibility it hitchhiked here in the box. Hope to see no more whatver it is.

That is definitely not a cockroach. I've seen many roaches in Qatar and UAE and this is definitely a beetle of some sort.

I know giant water bugs are known around here, but I've never seen anything like that.

Sorry you had to burn down your house.

I'm no expert and there are a number of types of cockroach--but it doesn't look like any of the cockroaches I've seen.

What happened to it? Did you catch it and if so can you post a closer-up shot?

Looks kind of like an assassin bug.

Edit: nm, my recollection of what assassin bugs look like is pretty off.

According to bug finder, it might be a salmonfly or stonefly. I am also happy to report that those giant mosquito-looking things are not mosquitoes, but actually giant crane flies. Hooray.

lol...I told my wife to catch it and put it in a jar of something so I could see it. Her exact tex "are you "f#^%ing kidding me?"

She sprayed it with windex and it fell off the box. At that point she poured toilet bowl cleaner on it. It was all she could find. It then fell in behind the step. Women.

Tell her it is now going to absorb the phosphates in the toilet bowl cleaner. While it metabolizes those materials it will "go nuclear" effectively and expand in size exponentially. When she wakes up to giant mandibles clackity clicketing in her face, don't blame me...

Looks like what we called in the day a June Bug
Some years they show up some times it is late in the year. Some times you don't see them at all.

We used to pop them with a magnifying glass or just squish em under foot.

Ahh yes the Seventies

Not a cockroach. Cockroaches have plates over their heads and exposed or highly reduced wings. I took a course in etymology to fill credits for my bio degree.

That looks like this:

If so, it's an imported invasive species.

i don't know what the actual name of the bug is, but i've always known those as stink bugs.... if you squish them, they really stink!

just checked the googles... i think they actually might be called stink bugs!

Doesn't matter what it is, that is too freaking big to live there one more minute.
You may be able to convince your insurance company it was justifiable arson.
