Calder Trophy Race: Johnny Gaudreau v Filip Forsberg & Ekblad too
Johnny: 53 points in 67 games
Forsberg: 53 points in 69 games
It seems the race will really be down to the wire this season for the NHL's rookie of the year award.
Johnny is getting hot at the perfect time while Forsberg has found himself in a bit of a slump coinciding with Nashville's struggles. Both guys are very deserving but I'm thinking Johnny can/will catch Forsberg down the home stretch in point totals. While the Calder Trophy is all about points, I think the scoring leader will be given the award this year.
I don't think Ekblad will get enough votes to be a realistic threat against the other two even though he's got that nice big body all the Florida hunnies are going crazy for.
What are your guys' thoughts?

I wonder how much of Nashville's resurgence helps Forsberg's candidacy. Flames have obviously bounced back in a big way, but the Preds have been near the top of the league most of the year and Forsberg played a big role in that (usually the flashy scorer gets more credit than the goalie who's actually responsible).
I think I agree, though, that ultimately the guy who wins the scoring race probably gets the trophy.

Real mature OP. Kid deserves some respect for his efforts as well. In case you need a reminder, it's FORSBERG.

It's close enough that it will go to a guy that makes the playoffs and it is not looking good for Florida at the moment.

I bet the title sounded really funny in your head...
Forsberg isn't even an Oiler or Canuck.

Ekblad has actually slowed down quite a bit over the past month, I think Johnny has a real good shot to win it.

I posted this on Twitter, for those interested:

I'd give it to Ekblad. To see an 18 year old d-man do what he has done this season, it's pretty unreal.

Ekblad probably wins this - but you also gotta include Klingberg from Dallas in the mix, check out his stats.

I'm not gonna give him any bonus points for being 18 or a D-Man just like Johnny shouldn't get bonus points for being 5'6 and Forsberg shouldn't get bonus points for "Man, Washington could have him on their RW right now, beside Ovie and Backstrom. At least they have Curtis Glencross".
That said, he's 27th in defenseman scoring which is no doubt a fantastic rookie season.
Klingberg is 23rd in defenseman scoring which is even better for a rookie. He's 4 years older but that doesn't make him less of an NHL rookie... he's never even had an AHL season.
Gaudreau is 42nd in forward scoring and tied for 18th among wingers (13th at LW).
Forsberg is 32nd among forwards and 19th among centers.
Definitely four players who are already flat out stars.

I say who cares. We know what the real victory this year is. Besides, winning it does not mean you have a superstar on your hands that is going to be a better player than the runner ups.
Wasn't Iginla a runner up and Brian Berard won or something?

If the Flames make the playoffs I think that gives Gaudreau the edge, as I don't think they would without him. It'll be a two horse race between Johnny and Forsberg down the stretch I think
