Giordano and Brodie pairing turning into one of the league's best
These two have been so good and are continuing to get even better together I think it deserves it's own thread. It's worth noting the Sportsnet commentators last night said Gio and Brodie are starting to rival the league's very best d-pairings.
They were lights out last season, and even though it's only been two games this year they look fantastic. The way Gio has developed into such a well rounded versatile defender is nothing short of amazing. With only one full season under his belt, Brodie looks like he will be a top pairing d-man for years to come and is only going to get better. It's amazing to watch the way they both use positioning and active sticks in their own end to shut down the other team's top players.
The Oiler's dismal blue-line really contrasts how lucky we are to have these guys. Both essentially had a goal today (save for that adept tip by Raymond)... how good are these guys going to be this season? Have we seen their best yet or can we expect them to get even better?
Definitely a bright spot on a rebuilding squad.

No doubt that Brodie's ascension is in large part due to Giordano wearing off on him. They are both such complete players that it's like 2 Flames teams when they are on and off the ice.

Even Edmonton has noticed. In the post game show on 630 CHED Reed Wilkins called Giordano a top-five defenseman in the NHL.

For the record, it was Hrudey who raised that point. Saying they were as good as any other tandem in the NHL. Thank god Sportsnet hired him.

Even one of the callers into CHED last night said Giordano is "the best defenseman in the league…well, most valuable to his team anyways."
If Oiler fans can see it through their rage infused vision after a loss like that, then how long will it take the rest of the league to catch on?

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. I think we're putting the wagon befor the horse, they haven't accomplished anything yet

I believe Giordano is definitely in this conversation. Brodie's not there yet but he has a chance to be at that level.

So, you disagree with the notion that Giordano and Brodie are turning into one of the NHL's top defensive pairings? I don't think this is "getting ahead of ourselves" at all, since the thread title and the ensuing discussion clearly acknowledge that they are not there yet. But when the media starts to make these sorts of declarations, I would say that the conversation is absolutely warranted.

I hope this is a pairing for a long period of time with this team. Brodie is going to get paid this offseason or sooner.

What about Giordano, isn't this the final year of his contract? What's a guy like him worth on the open market if Brooks Orpik is getting 5.5 per year?

Watching Gio play; I notice his decision making first, then his positioning, then his ability to jump into the play
Watching Brodie play; I notice the same stuff...
Having both these guys is s blessing for this team, they make a huge difference.

I believe Chara-Seidenberg was the other comparison from Hrudey last night. I agree - Gio and Brodie just seem to be so strong defensively and also able to break into the offensive zone at will. Lucky to have those two guys on the back end.
