Default Do you remember Marko Jantunen?

Drafted by the Flames in 91 and had a sip of coffee in the mid 90īs. Now he has fallen into bad times, been convicted of several (15!) drug offenses, one of them driving with amphetamin in his blood system. The fins been sentenced to three months' suspended imprisonment.

Apparently, the GM and Head Coach of the Kalkaska Rhinos, which is a junior team in Michigan.

His Bio makes me chuckle.

That seems shockingly unwise to me.

Yeah, after looking a little more into what he's been up to, that's probably true. Looks like he was arrested on Domestic Abuse charges back in 2007, although the original Polish article is down, this is all I could find on it.

He was in an advisory role to the Polish National Team after he left the NHL, but as per this, was dropped from his role after a physical altercation at a banquet with a couple of the team members.

Looks like he pulled his players off the ice and forfeited a game earlier this year: http://www.saultstar.com/2014/12/28/...cihl-officials

Didn't Oliwa come out a while ago with some kind of anti-steroid statement? I seem to recall him blaming roid-rage on some of his past behavior.

The 10 concussions probably didn't help either.

Oh the stories I could tell about that guy. I don't think any of them are appropriate though for this forum. He and Cris Simon were best buds though so that's probably all you need to know.

Oliwa did score in the western conference finals and the game went to overtime, which it wouldn't have otherwise, so that was something.

I remember Jantunen-he came over the same year as Jonas Hoglund. Just before camp, the flames were kind of talking them up like they were gonna be hotshot rookies or something. Hoglund made the team, Jantunen did not.

This was a sizable story here in Finland, unsurprisingly. Jantunen was generally appreciated for his locker room presence (or so I've read), and seemingly a really well liked person in Finnish hockey circles.

It's a sad story, but apparently it lead to a bunch of good talk on how life after sports can be hard for athletes etc. (Not that I followed any of it much.)

Hopefully it was the start of a better chapter for him too.
