Sylvan Lake to lobby Province to get beach back.
http://www.sylvanlakenews.com/news/288717871.html
Quote:
The prospect of Sylvan Lake once again enjoying a wide sandy beach has not been washed away by town council and plans are underway to lobby the province to help with the thousands of dollars needed for the project.
At its Monday meeting council unanimously agreed to ask the government to help maintain and restore the provincial park which includes the beach area.
However, even though Mayor Sean McIntyre said the restoration of the beach is a project he holds near to his heart, lobbying for an urgent care facility will remain council’s number one priority.
|
As much as I want a beach back, I struggle with this and think money could be better spent.
MOD EDIT: Please don't quote entire articles.

The one thing Alberta really lacks is beaches and lakes as compared to places like B.C. and Manitoba.
I see no problem with directing some provincial taxpayer money to this cause. It's Alberta's most popular lake and is centrally located between Edmonton and Calgary allowing for ease of access from both cities.

They should lobby for a decent public boat launch.

My buddy uses the boat launch on Rustic Road. I don't believe it is private.

Its been a long time since I've been there, but are there any pictures of how this non existent beach looks today? I remember it being quite a nice beach in the early 90s.

given the state the a bunch of things in the province, a nice beach is really important
perhaps the government could raise funds for this important project by implementing a dbag/jacked up deisel truck/white framed oakleys tax on many of the summer visitors

It looks like grass now. The only beach is over by the waterslides.

In short all the beach that was infront of the "sea wall" is gone. There is grass up between Lakeshore Dr and the "sea wall".

You're thinking of D-bags of yesteryear. Today's modern beach D-bag prefers Psy style Ray Bans of various ridiculous colours, to go with their backwards snap-back hats and stripey muscle undershirts. The truck part still applies however.
And add me to the list of people who spent many childhood summers at the Big Moo and that beach who didn't realize it wasn't even a beach anymore. Weird.

Sylvan Lake was a nice little town back in the 90s. Unfortunately they decided to kill their downtown core by allowing too much horrendous big box development on the outskirts of town complete with a Walmart. I believe they also put in some stupid regulation requiring bar patios to have a 6' barrier surrounding them to curb the number of people having fun. Now the main street is littered with empty storefronts and there's no more beach!

We used to spend all our summers in Sylvan Lake. It was a very nice town but progress has certainly changed things. Used to love getting treats at the bakery. I'm always a little sad to go back and see so many things that are different - the lack of a sandy beach is one of the biggest ones - but I still have very fond memories of those summers.

Sylvan lake is brutal. There's no beach, a bunch of cops running around checking for booze and some crappy bars/hotels. At least they still have water-slides for the kiddos I suppose!

They were pretty good 20 years ago as a kid but they are garbage now. Definitely not worth $35 for a day. West Ed is much better.

I'd also like to lobby for Hockey Central to return to its waterfront location upstairs. That place had an awesome atmosphere on game days; not so much at the old Cities location they moved into
