Some Props To Brian Burke
Nice example here from the new Clint Malarchuk book about the efforts Brian Burke makes behind the scenes to help people in need of some assistance.
Some props are due to Burkie overall I think. His stint in Calgary has been pretty non-eventful (in a good sense)so far. He has this team and organization on the right track. And when he brought in Treliving he said he step out of the media spotlight and let his new GM take on that role, and he has been true to his word.
So far, I think a lot of the Burke skeptics have to admit, things are progressing better than expected.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/...ticle21593927/
"Malarchuk is open about how difficult the process was, and it is a satisfying reveal. He was the Calgary Flames goaltending coach as he was working on the book, nearing the end. Reliving his past brought back his depression and he drank to self-medicate. With help from Flames GM Brian Burke and the NHL substance abuse program, Malarchuk returned to rehab and has been sober since."

There will be bumps in the road. Just look at the Avalanche. Things do look like they are moving at a faster pace than anticipated although it's still very early in the season.
Back to the topic you can't complain with what Burke has done. He cleaned house where he saw fit but was smart enough to keep a head coach that was doing a pretty good job. Sometimes new guys come in and if you aren't their guy that's never going to change. No big trades or quick fix additions. Everything to date seems pretty calculated.

So far Burke has done very little to take any credit for this rebuild.

Honestly forgot Burke is apart of the Flames. Probably means he's getting the job done.

I sleep better at night knowing there is a hockey guy in a hockey guys job.
No more newspaper publishers making personnel decisions. The last major one lead to two cups for a division rival.

As a Burke critic, I like the direction the team is taking under him. Having said that, I liked the direction Sutter took the team too. We saw how quickly it can come of the rails because of a bad move here or there. I hope he doesn't have similar brain farts that Mr. Sutter suffered from.

Two outta three cups Sutter? There is a million decisions to make yearly as a coach or GM, sometimes players live up to their expectations, sometimes they don't. It's no different for coaches.

Agree. He did quite well as GM For year one. After that, I was screaming for him to be fired from his GM duties and thrown back on the bench.
I always wonder if Calgary would have had a Stanley cup by now if that had occurred... Phaneuf probably would not have turned out the way he did either...
Speculation only...

I think Dion would have been Dion no matter who was behind that bench.

I blame Jokinen he was supposed to be the number 1 centre we all dreamed of. Things went down hill fast when him and Phaneuf didn't pan out. Jbo also under achieved. Sutter definitely tried and landed some big fish, they just never panned out for us. Maybe he picked the wrong coach for that group.

I posted this in the OOT from a couple of night's ago, but it deserves to be repeated in light of the legend that is Darryl Sutter:

When he was gm he didn't make any shocking trades or signings. Players currently steeping up were not drafted by him either.

Burke is absolutely responsible for where we are even if only for not getting in the way. Remember when all the Burke haters were saying he was going to drive us back into past decades by having us turn into a newer version of the Broad Street Bullies. Sometimes you give a leader credit for the things he doesn't do and for letting those under him do their jobs.

I see what you tried to do there
But if you're going to play the technicality game, Hiller wasn't drafted by Burke in Anaheim, he was signed as an undrafted free agent
