Anton Stralman's Calgary Connection

I certainly remember Anton Stralman's brief stint in the Flames organization, but it turns out that his time in our city involved a lot more than a training camp.

TAMPA BAY — Scroll through Anton Stralman’s career numbers.
You’ll find scant evidence of his time in Calgary. No points for the Flames. No appearances even.
But his association with the city, however brief, made a rather large impression on a young man and his family.
“It’s a good story,” says Stralman, these days a regular for the Tampa Bay Lightning. “If I ever write a book, that is certainly a chapter.”

Whatever Reinhart turns out to be, the Flames would have a pretty darn fine D corps with Stralman in the fold right now. Probably getting up there with the envy of the league.

9 points as well. Easy to gloss over with Gio and Brodie, but good enough to be tied with Wideman for 10th in the league. Definitely looking good with Hedman out

Thanks for posting this. I was wondering why people kept referring to Calgary missing out on Stralman.

This article reminded me just how deep our backend was back in 2009.

Although it never would have stayed together, can you imagine what our d corps would look like today if we kept all those guys?

Yeah, it's fun to dream, but I'm of the belief that while Brodie has shown promise for years, he has responded to incredibly well to the extra ice time, challenges and general opportunity afforded to our prospects by moving pieces from what should have been a dream team.

Same goes for forward prospects. Likely would never have developed the awesome culture we have recently

In the summer of 2009 — in exchange for Wayne Primeau and a second-round pick (Brandon Saad) — the Flames received Stralman, Colin Stuart and a seventh-round pick (Matt DeBlouw) from Toronto.

Sept. 29 — Darryl Sutter (with Robyn Regehr, Jay Bouwmeester, Dion Phaneuf, Mark Giordano, Cory Sarich already on his blue line) shipped Stralman to the Columbus Blue Jackets for a third-round pick (Max Reinhart).

So we traded Wayne Primeau and a 2nd rounder for Stralman and Colin Stuart, then traded Stralman for a 3rd rounder ...

I clearly remember being very disappointed when Sutter gave him up for so little so quickly. I remember his child was born in here in Calgary.
