I don't think the jets are doing enough to move into that zone. Their trajectory has not changed from the Thrasher days.

Montreal has a tremendous goalie and see decent players -- they could get out of the East but I don't think they'd be able to take down a Western Conference champion at this point.
Winnipeg though is a long long way from being a contender, even farther than Calgary or Edmonton. That franchise has been mired in perpetual mediocrity since the start and is not on any trajectory to get out of it.

LOL Jets haven't figured out what they want to do yet and the GM never does anything. They could replace their GM with an inanimate carbon rod and nobody would be able to tell.

What the??? Jets? They don't seem to be putting it together at all. GM isn't great, they have issues internally on that team... not my choice.
I would have to say Habs are currently the best Canadian NHL team and nobody looks close yet to overturn them.
We can revisit this thread in 2016

Rofl the Jets are no where near on the verge of becoming a powerhouse.
The status of Canadian teams as a whole right now is pretty bad. Montreal had a good season last year, but they fluctuate up and down. They are never consistently a contender year in and year out. Ontario teams aren't close. Vancouver's was the closest for a while, but their window is shut. The Alberta teams need no explaining.
I honestly don't think we'll see a Canadian team come out on top for at least the next 5-10 years. For that to happen you'd need the West as a whole to weaken, in particular the 3 big Pacific teams. I would say that Eastern Canadian teams are closest, Montreal in particular. But only because they play out East. I can't see any Canadian Eastern team beating out the Kings, Sharks, Ducks or Hawks in a 7 game series.

Montréal is the closest, with Calgary's youth and if they develop on pace combined with this year's draft class they might be the strongest a in a few years.
Jets? How can they be close without ever making a trade? Like, ever.

I don't think any are within 2 years of it but I'll say the flames. Why not? The most important position to have tons of depth on is at centre ice and I would argue the flames have the most depth of skilled centremen developing in the system compared to any of the Canadian teams.

I agree.
Kane is enigmatic, and Scheifele, Trouba, Morrissey, and Ehlers are all nice prospects, but as an outsider who hasn't followed the Jets, I never would have pegged them as the next NHL powerhouse.
What's your justification? Is there a real depth of great prospects ready the elevate the 22nd overall team to the top of the league?
