Default Transporting a car from Toronto

So im looking to buy a car from my cousin who's out in Toronto but one thing that hasnt crossed my mind yet was how to transport this thing to us in Calgary. I dont have the vacation time to fly to Toronto and drive it back

Has anyone have any experience with this?
how it's done and how much it might cost?
also, experience with out of province inspection?

Thanks

I know someone who shipped their car on a rail car. Check with CPR?

Call Car Freight.

403-248-0321.

They will truck it the whole way, and you don't have to worry about rail delays etc. We use them for all of our lease auction cars. You are probably looking at about $900-1000. Ask for Fred's truck, he is usually the most frequent guy in and out of Toronto.

once its in Calgary, do you have to complete an out of province inspection before it's road worthy/insurable?

Yes you will. Make sure you use a mechaninc you trust. A lot of mechanics use these cars as blank cheques, and hold you hostage on repairs that aren't needed, because they know if you don't fix it, you can't register it. It is also a good idea to take it for a spin, and do a good hour of hard braking someowhere to scrub any surface rust off the brake rotors. If they have any surface rust, you will usually be asked to replace them.

Also compare with Hansen's Forwarding for cost/service. I know a few people that have used them and were happy.

I used L. Hansen's once from Toronto (Rail yard drop off and pick up) it was about $1000. This was roughly 6 years ago though.

You can get rid of the surface rust on the brake rotors? They don't need to be replaced?

Like the submitter here, I just transferred a car by rail. Took it to Canadian Tire this morning for the out-of-province inspection, and it passed, but the guy pointed out the marks on all the brake rotors, which I figure happened while in transit. He said it wasn't a concern, but to keep an eye on it. Of course, it's annoying as heck when applying the brakes and hearing the sound.

Should I just take the car out and about tonight and do some hard braking?

If brake rotors have surface rust, yes you can get rid of it by just driving the car normally. But if you need to get rid of it in a hurry, some hard braking can do the trick. Just make sure you have nothing loose in your trunk or cabin when you do it. Lol.

Hard braking is also an effective way of ending an argument with the girlfriend.

Used Hansen's twice to ship a car to toronto and then back. No problems either time. Was $900 or so each.

+1 for Hansen's. Used them moving to and from Toronto.

Thanks for the suggestion. I called, but they said they do not transport antique vehicles since the vehicles are out in the open.

Great advice there. One method I've gone with if you don't have a regular mechanic is take it to a different brand dealership. If they can't sell you any parts, it's tougher to use it as a blank cheque.
