What happened to that guy? I remember him being a strong prospect and having a couple good seasons with Tampa then he just fell off a cliff

Personal issues played a big part of it. Quick google search will give you more details.

That's too bad, as a player I don't think he was too great last year but I hope it's not personal issues that are making him leave. I wish him all the best.

Nothing wrong with signing in Switzerland. Great lifestyle, good pay, and playing time without the pressure of NHL competition. I think it may be good for him.
I remember reading a great article on Hnat Domenichelli and how he absolutely loves playing in Switzerland with HC Lugano. His family is Swiss, and he now has a Swiss passport.

Yea I see that. Some bad inuries...concussion, knee and then recurring shoulder injuries (with a surgery). Then "Personal Reasons" sidelined him for almost 2 full seasons. Maybe he just never felt the same after the surgery?
Just weird because at one time I thought he was trending towards being one the better offensive dmen in the league then all of a sudden disappeared into the abyss.
At any rate, good luck to him in Switzerland.

Yeah, if you're making good money, Switzerland seems to be about the most ideal place to live in the world.

If I was a pro hockey player and things weren't going to work for me in the NHL, I would be stoked to sign in the Swiss league. Beautiful country, decent pay, and treated like a rock star, or so I've been told.

Awesome, small consolation prize for losing Lombo to NY!
Geneva is a pretty awesome place to live, and although the cost of living is quite high you get compensated quite well if you work here. Even the guys flipping burgers at McDonald's make like 25-30 CAD an hour!

Back in the 80s, Duhatschek wrote an excellent article on Kent Nilsson, who had left the NHL in his prime as one of the most talented players in the league, and was playing in Bolzano, Switzerland. The season before, he had scored 19 points in 21 playoff games with the Oilers. It painted a portrait of a much less rigorous professional regime than the NHL, and Nilsson dominating the league by putting in about a third of the effort he had to in the NHL. I remember the end of the article, where Duhatschek described Nilsson eating a box of bon-bons in the dressing room after a game, grinning and saying how much he enjoyed Switzerland. The implication was that Nilsson was wasting his remarkable talents.

Yeah, Swiss league would be alright. Seemingly a beautiful country and the worst travel distance is just over 400km

As far as I understand Ranger suffers from bad depression and social anxiety. May have played a part in this move.

I have no clue, so I googled it, and apparently a "combo meal from Mcdonalds, or similar" in Geneva costs around 13 CHF, or 15.5 CAD: http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living...nd&city=Geneva
This is not a cheap city.
