Good move. May have issues in the room but if hey can be sorted out, this could be a great deal.

not surprising - they lost Cooke last year and Neal this year, so they had to do something in the ####### department.

top 6 looking ok for pens?
kunitz - crosby - hornqvist
bennet - malkin - downie
curious what they intend to do with their checking line centers, as they now have spalling, goc and sutter (if they sign him which i'd assume they do).

Which Sutter went to Minny yesterday? I though it was Pittsburghs Sutter.

Brett Sutter went to Minny. Son of Daryl
Brandon Sutter is an RFA for the Penguins.

That was Brett Sutter. Brandon is an RFA and was qualified by Pittsburgh.

Spaling only took the 6th most FO's on Nashville last year so he seems like a guy to play the LW on that 3rd line with Pittsburgh and fill in at C when needed. Goc likely plays on the 4th line and either him or Adams moves to wing.
Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis/Gibbons
Hornqvist-Malkin-Bennett
Spaling-Sutter-Downie
Goc-Adams-Comeau
Or something like that.
Downie works in that he is cheap and has the ability to play with a Malkin if they want to move him up to top 6 or provide grit/defense to a 3rd line that was useless at times last year.
Still questions on the wings and what happens if Crosby and Malkin aren't scoring but that team at least looks like it can play it's bottom 2 lines and even get some secondary scoring out of them.

Still, kind of odd/sad that a team with the 2 best players in the world are nowhere near contender level.

How are they nowhere near contender level?
They were second in the East last year, lost in game 7 in the 2nd round to the Eastern Conference champions and look to be at worst the 3rd best team in the East, if not 2nd only behind Boston.

Boy oh boy, to my eyes Pittsburgh looks like a mess. They will make the playoffs because of their top end talent, but after Crosby and Malkin it really is a grab bag. Plus, they have a lot of money in a defender and a goalie, but neither are really the player you would want to have as your high cap, cornerstone piece. Letang and Fleury just don't seem to be top end.
After this free agency period, they really have put a lot of stock in Hornqvist being an impact top six forward. Big gamble considering the only other options are an aging Kunitz and Dupuis.

They lost their best defenseman, they don't have elite goaltending, and their top 6 is as weak as it's looked in years. They will probably (it's the Eastern Conference after all) make the playoffs but Crosby and Malkin would have to play the best hockey of their career to win a series or two in the playoffs. No longer a cup contender IMO.
