Default Help on putting my cat to sleep

Hey, my cat is on her last few days, at most 2 weeks, I want to put her to sleep. Just wondering, which vet would be the best, and how much it would cost.

Any vet will be able to do it, so there really isn't much worry there. Sorry to hear your cat is in a condition that requires it. If you've had her for some time, you may be surprised at how difficult it is to watch a pet close its eyes knowing they will never open again.

I would also do what you need to do to make the day special. Give the cat his favourite food, make sure you have the time to spend with him.

Have a friend drive you to the vet so you can hold him as long as you can.

The other thing I did after losing a pet was I had him cremated. This was about 8 years ago but it was only about $80. The place was done up like a small funeral home, and the staff was very understanding. It really helped me with the closure I needed.

Man, I'm sorry to hear about this. I won't be looking in this thread anymore as this stuff really gets to me, but I just want to wish you all the best during this time. Good luck buddy.

Our family has cremated all our dogs and spread the ashes in a park. It really gave a sense of closure. This thread breaks my heart. I feel for you.

Where do you live? I'm down in the SW, and Crowchild Vet Clinic has given a couple of my pets their last rites. Highly recommended.

Come to think of it, I've got a thirteen-year-old dog that's getting close to needing to be put down.

It's always so hard to say goodbye to our animals, but, if they're suffering and their quality of life isn't where it should be, it's an act of kindness to put them down.

To answer your most pertinent question, I'm not sure what Dr. Hagan charges.

Great. I read this when I was at work and now I'm crying
I'm not sure if I could be there when one of my pets passes on.

Yeah, putting pets down is a real hard thing.

I remember having to put the family dogs down. My father couldn't do it and i was handed the task both times. The worst part is when you put them on the table and the vet sticks the needle in. The expression i got from both dogs was as if they were saying, "why are you doing this to me"? Then the eyes close forever. Images that have always haunted me

Soory to hear about your cat SteveToms.

You'll thank me later for this tip . . . . . . ask to pay for the procedure first, before entering the room.

When it's all over, you'll just want to walk straight out of there rather than fumbling around for a credit card in a waiting room with other people and assistants.

Sorry to hear of your situation but it's a sad truism we out live them and there is nothing that can be done about that.

Best wishes.

My dad took the dog to the vet and they took him (the dog) to the back. My dad didn't stay with the dog. Not sure if it was my dad's choice, or the way that vet did things. All these years later and I still miss my dog.

Sorry to hear this SteveToms.
I wish you well through this hard time.
It's so very sad to say goodbye to a beloved pet.
It's the only time I've ever seen my Dad break down.

"A Pets Prayer"

If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this, the last battle, can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand,
Don't let this grief than stay your hand,
For this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship stands the test.

We've had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no tears,
You'd not want me to suffer, so,
When the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end,
And hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.
It is a kindness you do to me.

Although my tail, it's last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Don't grieve that it should be you,
Who decides this thing to do,
We've been so close, we two, these years,
Don't let your heart hold any fears.

Smile for we walked together for a little while.

Same here.

To the OP, my condolences. It's tough to say goodbye to a pet.

Sorry about your cat Steve. One option you may consider is having a vet come to your home to administer the shot. Ask your regular vet for a referral. For my own cat it was a good option because he was always stressed by the car ride to the vet. He passed on lying on his favorite chair, and the vet took him with her when she left.

Sorry to here about your cat my friend. There is nothing I or anyone else can say that will make your pain go away. Just remember all the good times you had with your cat and remember that your tears are not just from the pain but also from the joy your pet brought to you.

My condolences. I don't know if there is a worse appointment to make really. It tore my heart out to have to do this for our cat a few years ago.

I am probably the only one who opened this thread half expecting a request for how to actually do it yourself and avoid the vet bill. But then again I have 5 cats in my house right now, 2 of which insist on having a battle that rotates around who can piss on more of my clothing every night.

Despite that, the one of those 5 cats that is mine decided to eat a spool of thread the other day. I am fully expecting to have to be in your shoes shortly if he can't work it out himself. The surgery is just something we cannot really afford.

I think it would be a lot easier if there was nothing at all we could do.
